Closing the door, staying inside

Hi readers! So glad to see you again. 🙂

OK, you guys, would you want to go outside when it’s only 5 degrees?  (-15 Celsius for you non-Fahrenheit folks.)

Darn it, I did it for a year.

Lately I’ve just wanted to stay inside and…read.  Computerize.  Email.  Stoke the fire.  Make delicious vegetarian dinners.

Until tonight, that is.  Barry was gifted a partridge from his fishing partner and co-worker, Nancy.  She knows I don’t want to eat the bird, but Barry is game.  So we took the bird and layered it with rice and cream of celery soup.  Tossed it in the over for maybe 40 minutes.  He ate partridge; I ate rice and vegetables and we shall forever co-exist in married bliss.  (You believe that one?)

Anyway, I am still so excited about the birth of this new blog.  A baby blog.  A New Year’s blog.  A blog that’s barely crawling into the world with its diaper on.

Mostly I’m excited because of the fact I don’t NEED to post a blog tonight.  It’s a luxury.  It’s a gift.  It’s a sweet offering.  It’s not a NECESSITY.

And I am not obsessed with how many people are reading.  Earlier this afternoon there were 40 hits and all I could think of was “how cool that 40 people stopped by to read this blog!  I could hug every one of them!”  Later this evening, the stats count says 85 hits and there is still no attachment, no yearning for more.  Simply an appreciation for what is.  The very fact that I put pressure on myself to write the outdoor blog for 365 days made me long for readership.  Now I feel simply appreciative and grateful and happy.  And not HAVING to write a blog.

You want to see a photo from last January that I never published on the Opening the door, walking outside blog?  But I always liked this one very much.  It’s a dock leading out into Roland Lake, a lake upon which we once lived in a small cottage when our oldest child was born.  We were barely 24 and 25 years old when we lived on this tiny lake.

Dock covered with snow

Do you know what I am spending hours upon hours doing?  Going back into 10,000 photos from the past year and appropriately saving and deleting them.  It is a HUGE job, let me assure you.  Which photos should one toss?  Which photos should stay?  I am putting all the blog photos from Opening the door, walking outside in a separate month-by-month folder, after which I shall cold-heartedly delete the unwanted shots.  It will keep me busy for another month or two.

Speaking of Roland Lake, here’s a photo of the house where we used to live, all those decades ago:

Our long-ago house (on the left)

OK, I’ll tell.  It’s the house on the left.  We rented it from lovely folks (they still sent a Christmas card this year!)

It was strange, though.  We live in one of the least-populated areas in the country.  Arvon Township had 482 residents as of the 2000 census, and that’s stretching it.  And we lived within twenty feet of neighbors.  Their names were Maxine and Bert, and they were so very kind to the young 24- and 25-year-old neighbors, even though we had a dog named Tasha who chased deer when we weren’t watching.

Maxine fed me and our young son cookies and coffee (well, guess who was drinking the coffee?) on many a morning on the shores of Roland Lake.  She entertained us with stories of the “old days” in the lumber camps of the area.  No kidding.  She loved the woods, hunted avidly, stomped through many a swamp in her day.

It’s so strange how, as we grow older, we must say goodbye to the generations above us who taught and shared so much with us.  Maxine and Bert are both gone now, yet their memory remains fresh and clear, all these years later.

Fallen bones of aspen

The fallen aspen photo also comes from last January.  One that didn’t make the “cut” of the blogs posted at that time.

If I would open the door and walk outside…you might get some new photos.  In the meantime (yawn)…that couch looks pretty inviting.  And 5 degrees feels a little bit…chilly.   🙂

Kathy, I love your rough plastered wall. I wanted to do that to my living room before I painted the other day, but I didn’t have time to fool with the work and wait for the plaster to dry. The ancient plaster with cracks and patches looks rustic enough. But I want to try that on one of my rooms. I am thrilled you are taking pix inside.

    • Kathy says:

Carla, Barry provided an explanation of sorts about the drywall plaster (which I just put at the end of today’s blog.) You should try it! We love it– one wall upstairs and downstairs both has it.

  2. Kathy says:

Hello Diva Carla! Our rough plastered wall is kinda cool…we have one in the basement too. You can see all sorts of interesting patterns and shapes in them if you look hard enough. Did you see the photo on the wall? It’s a pic of Venice, Italy, that my brother-in-law gave us one Christmas. Turns out it was from exactly the same place where Kiah and I lingered on a bridge and looked out over the canal. Very synchronistic!

  3. Dawn says:

Yea for reading time! I have a Sheltie dog that I swear is anti-reading. Whenever I sit down to read she absolutely positively has to have something and only I can satisfy her. Silly dog. Very silly me.

  4. Dawn says:

PS: Loved the dock picture a lot!

    • Kathy says:

An anit-reading Sheltie! That is funny, Dawn. Silly doggie…sounds like it’s kind of like a little kid. I remember when our kids were little and I tried to do something just for me…forget it! Especially when the phone range. Glad you liked the dock picture. I always liked it, too…

Kathy, I’m so glad you have started a new blog, and the name of it gave me a good laugh. About indoor photographs–if you have a photo program on your computer, even a simple one, consider (and try) shooting without flash. The result may look too dark, but you can lighten it up on your photo program, and you’ll get a more natural look, not flattened out the way flash does.

    • flandrumhill says:

Pamela, I’m going to try your suggestion for the indoor photography. Good to know.

Kathy, every time I think about sorting out my photos and deleting the ones that probably should be deleted, hibernation thoughts start creeping in. If I had the choice between being a sleeper, a sorter or a snacker, I have a feeling it’s the last option that would win out 🙂

      • Kathy says:

Pamela, like Amy, I am now experimenting with your technique. Went into Picasso tonight and lightened up the non-flash photos. Think they’re “getting there”…at least a bit better. May buy that $5 tripod that Jessica suggested as well. Thank you SO MUCH for your help!!

Oh dear Amy my resolve for photography-deleting and organizing has not done too well this weekend. Other things suddenly seem more interesting. Like writing a new blog! ha ha… but still going to TRY and persevere…

  6. Quietpaths says:

Such a peaceful way to wind into the New Year. The layered limbs of fallen aspen are so striking. I love that picture! I’m so happy you are back in the saddle….

    • Kathy says:

Dear Christine, because I love your blog so much I wanted to name this new blog something like Quiet Lake Superior or Peaceful North Woods. But, alas…couldn’t quite figure it out. Hopefully the quietness and peace of this life will somehow appear in between the meandering words! Thank YOU for your support and encouragement.

  7. melinda says:

    now your’ talkin’!!!!!!!!!

  8. David says:

i wish that we also had snowfall here

  9. Gerry says:

Ah, the luxury of a snow day . . .

    • Kathy says:

Gerry, I suspect the Cowboy and Miss Sadie would not let you snooze away inside on your couch. They would be indignant. Alas…would you like me to send a special email to them asking for their understanding?

  10. Tim says:

I am glad to have you back blogging as well. Enjoy your writting and look forward to reading everything you have to say in this new blog… Thanks

    • Kathy says:

Thank YOU Tim! Heaven knows what is going to happen this year. Isn’t that amazing to consider? We have no idea what gifts and challenges await us in the coming year. I am glad you will be along for the ride.

  11. sahlah says:

10,000 pictures – I believe you. 🙂 I’ve developed a temporary filing system of one folder per month. Everything goes in there until I get around to cleaning it up. (Last time that happened was May…)

I was naughty yesterday and just archived the lot to the backup drive.

Oh well. Who knows what potential treasures might be lurking in the archives.

    Hope your evening way lovely.

    • Kathy says:

Dawn, sounds like our systems are similar. Maybe I should be naughty too and archive them to a backup drive. That certainly would take the work out of things. On the ohter hand, it’s interesting to go back and see all the photos and find a few missed treasures. Like old friends popping up to say “remember me? remember me?”

  12. Lucienne says:

    Dear Kathy,

I’m so happy you are here with a new blog. Remember last year when you started? There was something about a 40 days period for changes to adapt? Aha! And you thought you could just leave us and no more blogging….well at least not for the next 40 days…tee hee !
The title of todays blog is hilarious, so funny.
Another thing that made me smile was your stating how it was not a necessity:
    “Mostly I’m excited because of the fact I don’t NEED to post a blog tonight. It’s a luxury. It’s a gift. It’s a sweet offering. It’s not a NECESSITY.”

    While yesterday you wrote:
“Anyway, yesterday, umexpectedly, the Blogging Bug hit. It hit with a lovesick feeling. I HAD to return to blogging on WordPress! I had to! It was a Necessity. As necessary as eating, sleeping, and stoking the fire. It HAD to happen.”

Oh sweet paradox we call life!
Ok ..ok of course I know what you mean Kathy I am only teasing…..
perhaps because your excitement rubs off on me . So cool (lol) you’re still blogging up there in iceland and now we get glimpses of indoors too!

That wall does look great, is it done with regular paint and a special technique or is it a clay/mud procedure? My neighbour had done that, just like they do in Africa and India and it’s very kewl. I’ll tell Carla about that.

Well gurlie I am getting notifications this time of your new blogs in my email which I didn’t have before since they were coming in everyday anyway. But now I’ll have a direct link thru them.

Looking forward to your musings and pics.

    Hugz,
    Lulu

    • Kathy says:

Oh the sweet paradox we call Life, Lucienne. Oh my goodness. Don’t you find yourself saying and thinking contradictory things all the time? I certainly do. One minute it’s one thing and then the next…

So, girlie, you are stuck with me for at least 40 days!! It’s a necessity…it’s a necessity…until tomorrow when I write something like it’s not a necessity.

Love so much that you’re getting this through email. How are you guys signing up through email this time? Is it through the rss feed? I would love to know! Love to you, Lulu.

  13. Centria,
I love the new blog. I too am finally back from a long break, and isn’t it refreshing not being pressured to have to post everynight? Can’t wait to see what you have in store for us, Happy 2010…can you believe it is here already…once a dream, now a reality. Where are the flying cars? Personally, I am glad we don’t have them yet…keeps us more down to Earth…lol, literally! 🙂
    NLSM

    • Kathy says:

NLSM, YOU have returned!! I have been over to your blog a few times, to no avail. I thought you had disappeared completely. So happy to see you! But yes, I am so happy not feeling pressured. And because I’m not feeling pressured…have written a blog every night so far!

As for flying cars, go look at the flying golf cart I posted tonight! Flying cars may be right behind… LOL!

      • did it really say no avail.? I have this annoying spammer and am wondering if it is messing up my link. I had problems yesterday with it. Anyway, off to check out your post on flying golf carts. lol, have a great week!
        NLSM

  14. Kathy you look so lovely and cozy with your books and I can imagine the photo filing job. I just did my 2008 photos and I am about to start on 2009. My motivation was that I ran out of room on the computer. Congratulations on your new baby blog (psst! I have one two… about the same age:)

    • Kathy says:

I know who you are!! Oh how exciting, I put your blog on my blogroll so I can remember to come over and visit you. (You are the first blog on my blogroll here, as I haven’t transferred everybody else over yet…)

I LOVE your photography and will look forward to seeing more of what you post.

  15. Cindy Lou says:

I still think you should consider looking into a book for your”Opening the door” blog. As for archiving your photos from your adventure, that’s the kind of task that I seem to put off indefinitely as it seems overwhelming…..you’re more committed than I so I’m sure you’ll get it done! 🙂

    • Kathy says:

Cindy, I wonder what kind of wide-spread appeal this would have as a book? Whether people besides Michiganders would be interested? It’s hard to say. Maybe a publisher will materialize out of nowhere and offer a contract…LOL…that’s a dream anyway!

      • I just had a question are your readers currently only from Michigan? The parts of your journey last year that I have read were profound and not particularly geographically limiting. Keep dreaming:)

  16. Kathy says:

You are so very right, dear creativepotager! No, there are readers from all around the world. Thank you for the encouragement. Dreaming shall continue!

  17. Kathy says:

Phew, Reggie, so glad you stopped by and saw a copy of your book! We thought for sure you would have heard us talking about you. 🙂
