Corpse Pose anyone?

Savasana. Corpse Pose.

 Today was yoga.

You all know about yoga, don’t you?

That’s where you stretch into poses like Warrior One,  Warrior Two, Tree Pose, Sun Salutations and Downward Dog.

How I love yoga!

You breathe and you stretch and it’s like a dance.  Your body starts to flow like water and earth.  You reach further toward the floor and perhaps even begin to touch it.  You reach toward the sky and stretch toward the sun.

Yoga Is the Best.  Yoga is da Boss.

Spider pose. Surely there is a spider pose in yoga?

After Corpse Pose–that’s where you lie like you’re a dead person and meditate or float on the horizon of emptiness (you all know how to float or the horizon of emptiness, don’t you?)–you get dressed in street clothes and head back out in the Real World.

If you’re really into yoga–you start seeing Yogic Poses everywhere.  Of course the minute I arose from the mat I saw the dying wasp.  “Corpse Pose!”  I shouted to my teacher, Shanel.  As the wasp twitched, Shanel empathized with the dying creature.  I grabbed the camera from the bowels of the purse for a photo shot.

Immediately thereafter came the spider shot.  I’m sure Shanel wanted to go home.  However, I insisted upon trying to make the spider pose.  “C’mon spider, pose!”  It curled into a defensive posture and tried to disappear.  “What kind of yogi are you?” I asked the poor spider.  (Having googled “Spider Pose” I am now sure that the spider was simply offended that no yoga pose was named in its honor.)

Branch in fog pose.

I have been taking yoga lessons every Tuesday since spring.  It has been so incredible!

Driving toward town today through the thickest fog imaginable, I was ready to do Happy Baby and Spinal Balance and the Lunge.

However, one had to drive carefully to town to make sure one didn’t lunge off a cliff and into the lake.

Drive carefully through fog, all you drivers!  Be present!  Be aware!  Breathe deeply!

Of course I had to pull over by the bay and attempt a fog photo or six.  However, every image that I really liked presented itself in a spot where the car would be endangered.  One had to settle for a pull-off to take fog photos.

Swim platform in fog pose. (Hold very still. Don't let the waves rock you.)

Our son Christopher is still home until Friday morning.  We haven’t seen a lot of him.  He’s been visiting friends and attending class reunions and kayaking down the Sturgeon and Otter Rivers.  He’s helping Barry build the garage tonight and maybe tomorrow–just maybe–he and I will hike a little mountain.  Depending on the rain forecast and my work schedule.  We shall see.

Sandals in rain pose. (That's kind of like Tree Pose without the feet...)

The guys grilled steak tonight, can you believe it?  This household has not seen red meat in maybe four years!  We are a primarily vegetarian and low-fat household.

However, when Barry heard Chris was arriving, he started planning.  He has this theory that our vegetables will taste better on the grill with the faint flavor of charred meat.  (Silly fellow!  Why do we need a meat taste on our vegetables?  Why?  But there’s no arguing with a fellow who hasn’t had red meat in four years.)

Computer & forest become One Pose. Stare at your computer until its reflection becomes One with the World.

I didn’t eat the steak. No.  Instead sipped blended brocoli soup.  Ate grilled multi-colored peppers, onions and mushrooms.  Corn on da cob.  OK, and then I had to go back for a piece of Ezekiel toast with peanut butter and jelly.  While the guys licked their chops and chewed their steak.

It’s been a good day.  The two books Pamela sent from Dog Ears Books arrived (the sequel to the Trees by Conrad Richter.  Named:  The Fields and The Town.)  I am also deeply engrossed in a foreign film with subtitles named Seraphine.  Am truly enjoying it so far.

Life feels rich and full.  Standing in Mountain Pose, breathing deeply.  Life is good…

  1. OMG the sandals look like they belong to a bug!!

    • Kathy says:

Weird distortion, don’t you think? Those sandals are SIZE 12!! Men’s size 12!! Shhh, don’t say this too loudly or my son will get a complex. LOL!

  2. Robin says:

Happy Baby Pose and Corpse Pose are my two favorites. But then again, they are all good. Even the poses I don’t think I like are good because I feel better after doing them and that makes me like them.

Yoga is strange that way… 😉

Poor spider. There really ought to be a spider pose. The wasp does a fine Savasana. Good form.

Love the shot with the shoes. (I’m not obsessed with shoes. Really. I’m not. It just seems that way because pictures of feet and shoes became a sort of accidental niche for me and now they grab my attention.)

    • Kathy says:

Yes…all the poses are good…even the ones that seem challenging. I am glad to hear you are sympathetic to the spider’s plight. As for being obsessed with shoes…let’s be obsessed together, Robin! There’s something about shoe photos which are intriguing. Because, really, well, I don’t know about you–but I am always looking at a person’s face. So to finally look down and notice the shoes–that’s important. The Lunge pose shall now be known as the Shoe Noticing Pose. Do you think?

Swim platform in fog pose — that’s the one that really spoke to me through the computer screen this late afternoon. Followed closely by Sandals in rain pose.

I admire that you stuck to your spoon and had blended broccoli soup. Do you ever air pop, popcorn and eat it without the salt and butter? Did you know that there are SIX GRAMS OF FIBER in just three tablespoons of unpopped popcorn? That might be a nice snack while you’re watching Seraphine (adding that to my list to get from the library – thank you).

    • Kathy says:

Oh my goodness, Laurie, do we think alike! Guess what I ate last night while watching Seraphina? POPCORN!! And, since I can’t eat hardly any fat, I sprayed it with shoyu (soy sauce) and munched happily, happily, oh-so-happily. Love your phrase “stuck to your spoon”! Gotta remember that. I never did like steak anyway. I think it tastes–awful. Like steak. Icka! Pardon me, steak lovers.

  4. barb says:

Life definitely is good. You made it safely home in that fog and your son is still there to visit with you. Enjoy – I like Yoga, too.

    • Kathy says:

Barb, it is always so good when we make it safely home in the fog. Glad to hear you’re a yoga afficiando, as well. Chris heads back to California tomorrow–it’s our last full day together.

  5. Shanel says:

I wasn’t in a hurry to leave at all. On the contrary, I was quietly and happily observing your infatuations with the bugs in my studio, dead (almost) and alive alike!

You truly make me laugh out loud to read these blogs….you are such a joy! Thanks for being you!

    • Kathy says:

Hi teacher! Love how you put that~~my infatuation with bugs! Yep, it’s the truth… (Barry found a spider on our bathroom faucet this morning and we had another photo shoot. LOL!) I love how we laugh a lot before and after our yoga sessions. It makes yoga extra fun.

  6. K Odell says:

Yoga is on my bucket list! someday I will regularly go to yoga. Hopefully I’ll still be able to move, balance and stretch by then. btw, YOUR dinner sounded delish!

    • Kathy says:

K…oh it’s always lovely when people have a bucket list and ideas of cool things to do before they…well, never mind. Listen, if I can still move, balance and stretch–anyone can! I can hardly touch my toes and yet this yoga thing is working out! (Still need to figure out how to fit it in daily, though…)

  7. Zara says:

Your blogs inspire me to live more concsiously & appreciate the simple things in life.

    • Kathy says:

Zara, your comment made my heart soar! That is my most-secret desire for this blog. Exactly what you said. I bow deeply to you.

  8. jeffstroud says:

    Kathy

I with Laurie in the best photograph choices, Fog and sandals, Computer screen shot is cool too!

This is just to infectious, LoL! I love your joy of Yoga, and your envisioning it everywhere! What fun!
Yes, “sticking to your spoon” is a great line… Glad you held out! Thank you for the Movie suggestion with Everlasting Moments that Barbara suggested and now Seraphine my list is growing.

    I am Love, Jeff

    • Kathy says:

It’s weird, Jeff, yesterday or the day before there was a voice in my head saying, “Why are you writing blogs anyway, Kathy? These are just ridiculous!” and then to come on line and have such positive feedback. Thank you, thank you. As for holding out against steak…no problem! Holding out against an ice cream cone~~not always possible! Have a great time at your art show this weekend.

      • Colleen Lloyd says:

Kathy, I’m so very glad that you keep that little voice in it’s place and continue to inspire us all. What you do is so very special. Tis a wonderful gift, my friend 🙂

  9. P.j. grath says:

You may be assuming different yoga positions, but no one would ever accuse you of posing, Kathy. You are too natural for that. Hmmm. Swim platform in fog looks very relaxing to me.

    • Kathy says:

Pamela, it took a lifetime to learn how to be natural, how to be really me. That might be a blog someday… Doesn’t that swim platform look haunting in the fog?

  10. Dawn says:

    I like the Japanese-type branch in fog…

  11. Martha says:

I agree with Zara. She put it into words for me. Your blogs help me live more consciously. Thank you for them.

    • Kathy says:

Martha, a big hug to you! Another big hug! Thank you. If this blog inspires anyone to live more consciously, I shall continue… Blessings, dear friend.

  12. Karma says:

I love the way you imagined your poses into life – except for the bug corpse one; coulda done without that! 😉
I’m taking Zumba classes this summer! Whew, I sweat just thinking about it; should be a challenge tonight in this weather we are having, although it appears your high temps have begun to move out with the fog and rain. We are enduring heat warnings and record high temps right now around 100!

    • Kathy says:

Karma, it is too bad that wasp decided to exhibit Savasana pose for us when it could have been flying around the yoga studio. 😦 So now I am wondering what Zumba might be? It sounds sweaty! It sounds challenging. Is it fast moving, wild and crazy?

      • Karma says:

Yes! Zumba is all those things. It is a combination of salsa-dancing, belly-dancing and aerobics in an hour long workout. I take jazz and tap dancing during the school year (great exercise and fun with folks I’ve been dancing with for years now), but usually the dance studio is closed for the summer. When they decided to offer Zumba once a week for the summer I decided to give it a try.

  13. Cindy Lou says:

My favorites today? The branch and the raft … both so mysterious yet serene.

And I agree with the others that you… your words and wisdom and joy and silliness in the simple things … help make my own journey more intentional and grateful for all I have. Thanx, friend!

    • Kathy says:

Hello my friend across the bay. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Thank you for your incredible spirit and its desire to become more intentional and grateful. I see it shining like a full moon over the Keweenaw Bay.

  14. Emma says:

I love all your suggested poses, especially fog pose. 🙂

  15. Colleen Lloyd says:

Kathy, I always love reading your comments and descriptions about the food you prepare and eat. Right now I’m wolfing down a yogurt and fruit breakfast and reading this before I race outside to catch up with Mom who is already outside….starting up her electric hedge trimmers and getting ready to tackle her looooooong and laaaarge hedge. If I’m lucky, she just might let me do more than bag the trimmings. Did I mention she is 89 yrs young! I’m going to need to go into training before our next visit!

I also echo Cindy Lou’s thoughts and words and add my own heart felt thank you!

    • Kathy says:

Colleen, we could do a blog where we just photographed and wrote what we ate every day! (I suppose that might get a little boring after a while.) Smiling thinking of you with your Mom. Hard to believe she’s 89 and still that active! What an inspirational woman.

And you inspire me. All the time. All you guys do.

      Tears coming.

      Blessings today and always!

  16. Gerry says:

Branch in fog pose. Story of my life.

    • Kathy says:

Yep, Gerry. You know the highest spiritual adepts say that to live confidently and consciously in the fog–without needing to know–is one of the highest attainments. To simply be waving in the wind, not-knowing…
