Look what is curled up beside the road!
Actually, this is what the side of the road looked like--if you didn't look closely.
A curled up baby raccoon!
Oh my goodness, let's look closer. Do we see a second baby in the background?
The back baby. We should call him a raccoon "kit". That's what it is--officially.
You could have reached out and touched them. The camera was five inches from this kit's face. Don't touch, though. Mama wouldn't like it.
Mama will be back soon. She's just out hunting, I'm sure. We'd better not disturb them anymore. Goodbye babies! You are so adorable.
About Kathy
I live in the middle of the woods in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Next to Lake Superior's cold shores. I love to blog.
These are awesome! Have brave of you to come so close! I know, I know as a photographer we will take the risk!
I am Love, Jeff
OHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, how precious! Oh my gosh, but they’re adorable. And to stay so neatly tucked away while mom’s out foraging. I wonder what they thought when they saw you? They didn’t look scared in the least.
They are darling! What a treasure of a find, Kathy. I love the universal look in all babies’ eyes: Curiosity and innocence. Thanks for sharing these sweeties with us …
Great shots! Wise decision to get out of there before mama returned. Thanks for posting.
Oh my Kathy! What great shots you were able to get. I am only home for the day before going back to “the big event” of my daughters wedding and yours is the first email of the morning… How wonderful:) Nicely done!
Oooooo…….They are so adorable! On the last picture…..look closely into the eyes of this baby……..I see you Kathy!! 🙂
You are lucky Momma wasn’t around. They are awful cute.
What an adventure! Your eyes and heart take you wonderful places!
Too cute for WORDS!!!
super cute!
Oh boy, you’re gutsy! I would be paranoid that the mother would come up from behind and jump me 😉

Kathy, what a gift for all of us to see 🙂 Your photos have captured their dear little characters.
Forget comic sans – bring on the baby raccoons! Can’t believe that you actually captured the glow spot in their eyes. You wonder what they were thinking while you were snapping away? If only they knew that they are now famous. I saw your neck of the woods on Nat’l news last night but wasn’t really listening until the UP was mentioned. I think it was about a native son being drug through old garbage.
Kathy, how amazing to see those little guys. We’ve lived with racoons for….well, almost forever and haven’t ever seen a baby. Not once. Incredible photos and observation by Sue. It is you!! I know I’m repeating myself, but…how amazing 🙂
Precious babies.
Raccoony!
Unbelievable and Awesome…
I am talking my hubby into going on a trip your way!!!!!!
Kim
Beautiful little ones, great shots. Thanks for sharing them. Try to remember how cute they are later on this winter when they’re trying to get into your attic! LOL
They are beautiful!
Oh, how lucky you are! No curled up fawn pictures, but curled up kit pictures make up for it! I am a bit surprised that mama was out foraging in the daytime though. As most mothers, I suppose, she’s gotta do what she’s gotta do!
Very cute as kits!
Babies are always so cute, whether they’re fawns, raccoons, puppies, kittens, humans. . . . And then they grow up and sometimes that cuteness doesn’t stay with them.
Really nice pictures!
What fantastic find, Kathy. yes, please no petting.
Someone here on our property found day old bunny babies and touched everyone of them. Needless to say, they didn’t survive 😦
I asked my mom and she said that I can’t have one . They are so darn cute.
Glad you all enjoyed the raccoon babies as much as I did! They sure were adorable, weren’t they? (And the mama had already moved them a few hours later. Now I can’t even figure out exactly where they were before.) The first time I had ever seen raccoon kits up close!
Awwwww…… 🙂
Makes you want to kiss them, doesn’t it? Better not lean too close! 🙂
Oh Kathy! The darling babies, what a marvelous wonder…
Such pretty kits, and well-fed. I wonder if other animals think baby humans are pretty, too?
Barbara and Gerry…still amazed by these darlings! Gerry, I wonder what animals do think about baby humans? Love the way you think!
How gorgeous! We don’t have raccoons here in the UK (that I know of). Are they very wild? Presumably they bite?
Val
Val, I do think they would bite–very hard. Not the babies. But the mama would probably bite. They are very wild around here. In the cities they can become nuisances as they are very cunning and develop a knack for opening garbage cans and rummaging around. We don’t see them close-up very often, and hardly ever do you see the babies. This was a treat. (And even more of a treat that the mama wasn’t too close during the photo shoot!)
I’ve never seeeen raccoon babies before! I keep coming back to look and to look some more. lol raccoons must have just magically generated until now
Actually, Elisa, I am just as fascinated with these raccoon babies. Even tried to draw one! (Yikes!) It was a special moment to come across them lying so innocent and sweet beside the road.
ooooooohhhhh the things that LOOK innocent and sweet!!
wriggle wriggle!
