Canon Rebel with telephoto lens
Welcome to my wide new world. Thanks to the Canon Rebel camera, we can now see vistas. “We can see for miles and miles. . .” We can see all the way to Canada, across Lake Superior. (Just kidding! The telephoto lens really can’t see that far!)

Canon Rebel: just a little autumn drive down a rolling hill last Saturday
Here is the side-by-side comparison, suggested by K O’Dell from Banterings of a Basket Case. Although her blog suggests she might be a bit of a basket case, I think she offered some really sage advice: post the same picture taken with each camera – then we will compare.
So here you have it. First two shots: the Canon Rebel. Telephoto views.
Third shot: same view from the Sony Cybershot. No depth and makes you think the trees are all yellow, doesn’t it?

Next Specimen for us to analyze: the infamous Indoor Shot. I almost cried last Christmas when–finally–I took the Sony inside after a year of outdoor photos. I wanted to photograph family opening gifts and toasting the New Year. Instead…let’s just say it wasn’t pretty.
The following photo is from the Art Gallery Friday night. Smiling cute little girl eating apple. Taken with the Canon Rebel. A flash button popped up automatically and lit the wee one in soft light.
Remember the cute little girl from the Art Gallery Friday night? Here she is a la Canon Rebel.
As for Ms. Cybershot, she performed dismally. The flash photo washed out everything in a stunning bright light which obliterated the child. This photo softened her features but makes the viewer squint eyes to see in focus.
Here she is a la Sony Cybershot who absolutely can not take an indoor photo gracefully.
The answer you’ve been waiting for:
YES! She bought the Canon Rebel camera body yesterday for a cool $275 from a fellow named Chill.
NO, she doesn’t have the proper lens yet. She’s going to buy that, as well, probably through Ebay. The lens she wants costs about $700 new, but she thinks she can purchase it for much less. She hopes. (Since with the new car purchase she should not be thinking about buying a lens at all!)
Lest we start imagining Ms. Canon Rebel is anything special...look who I met in the woods today!
On the other hand…let’s try to imagine the cost of the above telephoto lens. The little lens I want probably costs next to nothing compared to this one owned by a fellow named J.P.
It would be interesting to compare the Canon Rebel with this one, wouldn’t it?

Good for you for buying the Canon! I am glad you made a wise choice, and you have seen the difference!!! Wow, think of all the fun you will have, and you may meet more people in the woods… or not! JP must have been taking shots of birds or animals…

As much as you use your camera, you deserve the Rebel! Good for you! Life is short, you know, and when you find something you love, you have to just go for it. Endless opportunities for gifts now – lenses, other accessories: is your Hub listening here?

The difference is amazing in the side-by-side comparison. The Rebel definitely does a better job, especially indoors. Between you and Karma, I may be convinced to jump into the DSLR pool soon.

Congratulations on finding a camera you like. However, I feel the need to shout …. I LOVE MY SONY CAMERAS. I have two (one with 3 lens and the other point and shoot fancy automatic) and they are so GREAT … I have never had any problems and the only bad pictures have been due to my user errors.

Thank you all, thank you all. I am, however, now feeling mighty guilty about showing you only the Sony Cybershot’s faults and weaknesses. Bearyweather has made a good point. Ms. Sony Cybershot has taken some lovely lovely lovely photos over the past two years. You can scroll back and see what a good job she has done over and over again.
I humbly admit to probably hurting her feelings by only showing the larger vistas and indoor shots which she…seemingly…cannot do as well.
How would I like it if someone wrote a blog listing only my weaknesses?

Hey, keep the old gal around for when you don’t want to carry the Rebel. She still works well.
Besides eBay, look up the lens on KEH.com. They are very reliable and though their prices might not be as low as you’d like, they are very conservative when it comes to the condition of the lens. A lot of times their “bargain” rating is excellent or better somewhere else.
Also, if you are in need of a lens for a short time like for a vacation or special project, renting them is a very good option. I use lensrentals.com and have never been disappointed and they are very nice people to boot.

Thanks for the info on KEH.com, Scott. I will definetely look there. Right now I am “borrowing” Barry’s all-purpose lens from his work, and a not-so-good quality telephoto lens. I think these two will suffice until a decision is made about the new lens purpose. Never knew you could rent lens! Learn something new every day. Learn something new every minutes sometimes, I swear.
Congrats, Kathy! Isn’t it interesting that we’ve both made that purchase since we started talking about chatting with the hubbies about a DSLR joining our lives, and we’ve both ended up with a Rebel? I had a touch of buyer’s remorse in the very beginning, but since I’ve gotten to know my Ms. Rebel much better, the remorse is looooonnnngggggg gone.
Well, Karma, your purchase of your Rebel was a BIG inspiration for me this past year. I figured…look at the quality of shots Karma is getting…I want that, too. My buyer’s remorse is that this Rebel doesn’t have the megapixels of the newer cameras, but…oh well…the camera literally dropped in my lap. No, didn’t literally drop. We wouldn’t want that to happen. And I am so confused half the time, where are the lens caps? Which lens to use? How do you adjust this thing anyway? Going to be a bit of a learning curve, methinks.
