United Airlines brought our baby home last Tuesday afternoon. However, she’s not a baby any more. She’ll be 25 years old next week and she’s been the Best Nurse in the Universe after my gall bladder surgery.
River of ice from the sky
It was barely snowing on Tuesday as her plane jetted from Chicago to Hancock, so she aimed her camera out the window and snapped photos.
I was mesmerized by the images she captured. Flowing rivers of ice. Matchstick trees. The winding Portage Canal opening up to Big Lake Superior.

The view is so different from an Eye in the Sky. What a wider perspective we suddenly possess! We view the vista like an eagle soaring on the lake breezes. Suddenly our problems seem dwarfed, less important. The world expands to a bigger more comfortable place.
When the trees look like matchsticks...
This afternoon Kiah put the ornaments on the Christmas tree. We’re listening to Christmas music. The house feels cozy and festive. She’s baking focaccia with our pasta and vegetables.
Land of a million trees
A mama could get spoiled! She and Barry keep saying, “What can I get you? What would you like?” I walked slowly, oh-so-slowly, to the mailbox today. It felt like climbing Mount Everest! But every day keeps getting better and better and better. Surgery will soon–I’m sure–be a distant memory. Far away, like matchstick trees.
The vista is improving.

I’m still in Encinitas, California taking care of my dad. Because Christopher lives in this area, you’re aware of the amazing amount of water we’ve received in the past few days. Hopefully he’s well – we’re up on a hill (happily, one that hasn’t slid away).

YAY I LOVE THE TREE UPON SNOW IMAGES!! They look like india ink etchings! I have probably used the wrong artistic term, which will have to be perfectly fine as it’s not an area that I know much about! Happy Seasons to you and to yours Kathy!

This is a story book Christmas for you. (and now it’s an illustrated book to boot!) Let me know when Kiah starts selling her work! Very happy to hear about the progress you’re making. It’s no small wonder with the love that surrounds you both near and from afar. All you need to do now is Skype Chris in and you are all set! Keep listening to your nurse and surrogate doctor. You will soon be able to let loose, what do you like on your pizzas? (I hope it’s not granola)

I am SO GLAD all of you enjoyed Kiah’s photos from her plane! I still love them, especially the up-close ice river and the up-close trees. Thank you also for your continued well-wishes. I am 80-85% better today. Feeling more perky every day! Except for having to cough. Then it’s no fun… Hope you all are having a very Merry Christmas! And may 2011 be the best year of your lives! (It has been a joy to share 2010 with you all.)
