Miss Marianne and the Missed Memories, eh?

Three leaves

Please!

Please!

Help a challenged woman with her memory issues.

Here’s the deal, regular readers.

At 11 a.m. EST the phone shall ring and I will talk with a dear blogging friend for the first time.

Her name is Marianne and she writes a lovely blog called Grandeurvision:  A woman’s journey to find meaning in life.  I’ve been reading Marianne’s blog–and she’s been reading mine–for a long time.  A year?  Two?  Three?

Three birds

We feel like friends, even though we’ve never met or talked on the phone.  Until today.  11 a.m. EST.

Marianne hasn’t always had the easiest of times.  She has rheumatoid arthritis and struggles to keep an even keel with this autoimmune disease.  Seven months ago she ended up in the hospital, perhaps with Death at her doorstep.  Please visit In the End, Only Love Matters to read her story about what she learned.

And learn is something Marianne does with everything that happens to her.  I’ve watched her turn challenging situations into love dozens upon dozens of times in the last few years.

She seeks to grow spiritually, to heal, to live fully.

She’s an inspiration to those of us who know and love her.

I’ve so enjoyed knowing that she exists in the Universe.

She’s a special person indeed.

Wish I could remember where I took this picture in April 2010...

Here’s where MY challenges come in.

Before the phone call I decided to sit on Marianne’s blog hearth and re-read some of her lovely inspirational posts.  When suddenly it hit like a ton of bricks against this dim-witted forehead:  I haven’t even added Marianne’s blog to my blog roll!  Oh, Kathy.  Shame, shame, shame.  Where is your head?  How could you do this to a blogging friend for all these years?

And not only that, sigh, not only that.

I recently discovered several long-read blogging friends whose blogs have not been added.  Including Sybil from Eastern Passage Passage over there in Nova Scotia.  Just discovered that omission last weekend and apologized profusely for six hours. (OK, at least one long paragraph of sorry babbling.)

From a Duluth, MN, museum! Orange-utan...ha ha ha ha...

So here’s the scoop.

If you are a regular commenter on this blog and we regularly read one another’s blog–and you are not on my blog roll–please feel free to knock me alongside this forgetful head (OK, offer a gentle reminder along with a virtual hug) to add your blog to this blogroll RIGHT NOW, Kathy, and don’t wait until three summers from now when your memory kicks into gear.  (That is the most convoluted sentence I’ve ever written but I already adore it and will not change it to make it more readable and please tell all your internal editors to just grin & bear it and not to snap their editing pencil between their teeth in frustration.)

Let’s make it simpler.

1)  You are a regular reader of Lake Superior Spirit for more than 2-3 months.  You comment.  (Sorry, you non-commenters.  I actually use the comments to track all my blogging buddies.)

2)  I am a regular reader of your blog.

3)  Write a comment beneath this blog gently reminding of the omission.  You are allowed to whine, fuss and carry on for three paragraphs.  Anything longer than that–how ’bout an email?

See Canada over there? See it? You can't?

Another memory issue that arises–I can’t remember where Marianne lives.  I am thinking Canada, but that might be six countries off.  If Marianne does live in Canada, as well as Sybil from Nova Scotia, maybe I have an unconscious blog roll forgetfulness about Canadians?  Oh no!  That could not be so.  Let’s hope not.  Let’s see if any more Canadians come forth.

Canada, you know, is on the other side of Lake Superior.  If you travel down to the lake shore and stretch your eyes north, you can imagine northern Ontario’s craggy rocks on the far shore.  I have nothing against Canadians.  A few of my friends are from this fair land.  Hi Nicole!  Hi Amy-Lynn!  Hi Dana!  Hi Terrill!  Hi everyone Memory has forgotten!

Sometimes Canadian folks end their sentences in “eh?”  (Sometimes we Upper Peninsula residents end our sentences in “eh” too.)  That’s how we know we’re related.

They say things like, “What’s the weather like today, eh?”

And we say things like, “Nice day, eh?”

Our son Christopher (you officially met him and his entire life history here, poor lad) once arrived home wearing a tee-shirt that said, “U.S.Eh.”

I laughed for six hours.

Laughed so long that he bought an identical t-shirt for his dad the following Christmas.  (Later postscript:  I am now wearing the aforementioned t-shirt in honor of Canada, Marianne and blogging, not necessarily in that order.  With a long-sleeved shirt underneath, in case any of you suddenly became worried that Kathy would freeze in a t-shirt.)

Gosh, it may prove embarrassing if Marianne is from southern Texas and I’ve rambled on and on about Canadians in this blog.

Can’t wait until 11 a.m.!

And do stop by and meet her.  (And Sybil.  And all the others I’ve recently added to my blogroll, except I can’t remember who.)  You will NOT be disappointed!

About Kathy

I live in the middle of the woods in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Next to Lake Superior's cold shores. I love to blog.

  1. Don’t beat yourself up about this. I stopped adding to my blogroll a long time ago. Why? Because people were changing addresses, or disappearing, or whatever. I think that the fact that you link to people’s blogs within your posts is more important than the blogroll. Blogrolls become lists, only useful if you know you are going to link there constantly. I use my blogroll as a shortcut to blogs that I have responsibilities too (like commenting on children’s 100 Word Challenges). Maybe it is rude of me not to add people to my blog roll, but I try to generously link to my favorites whenever it seems appropriate. It’s the best I can do.

    Be kind to yourself, eh.

    Lisa

    • Kathy says:

OK, Lisa, I’ll be kind! Kind is good… It’s fun to add blogs within posts because it highlights our dear friends. I just didn’t think it was fair cuz people do click on my blogroll links all the time…and I wish they were clicking on Marianne’s too! Hey, are you on my blogroll? Going over to check, asap. P.S. I don’t really beat myself up about too much these days. Life is too short for that!

  2. Marianne says:

Oh Kathy, I cried and laughed while I read this blog. Thank you so much for the mention and the blog roll. I look forward to our call. I’m from Canada, eh, Ontario, specifically not far from Toronto. I definitely know what you mean about the “eh” I hear it all the time. LOL! 🙂

    • Kathy says:

I am glad you liked this, Marianne! Phew, Canada, Ontario. Good memory. Very good memory indeed… I really should get out of these pajamas and prepare for our call… But then again, Jammies are the New Cool. 🙂 Talk to you soon, eh?

  3. Brenda Hardie says:

Have a fun visit with Marianne! And have a great day Kathy! 🙂

  4. I seem to be on your blogroll, and be assured I am honored. I also have to say that I LOVE Marianne. She was my first subscriber way back when. I’ve read her blog for a long while. What a dear, dear person. Hope you all have an amazing conversation.
    Hugs,
    Kathy

  5. Heather says:

Okay, this was hilarious! This is my favorite : “You are allowed to whine, fuss and carry on for three paragraphs. Anything longer than that–how ’bout an email?” Sorry, other phrases. U.S.Eh. I don’t hear that often around here, but being originally from southern Ohio, it tickles my funny bone when I do year it. Kind of like hearing a well-placed “y’all” when in the south, or even a “yins” in the Ohio/West Virginia area 🙂

    • Kathy says:

I adore that you find this hilarious, Heather! You know another phrase around here that we didn’t hear downstate? “Yous guys.” Especially from waitstaff in the restaurants, “Anything else, yous guys?” Only in the U.P.

  6. P.j. grath says:

And I thought you were going to ask what the leaves and that I could jump in and be the first to yell, “SEA GRAPES!”

  7. Munira says:

Heheh….I have no issues with you. We’re cool. 8)
    And you’re so funny!

  8. “U.S.Eh.”

    Oh my gosh, that’s HYSTERICAL!

  9. Love the “cantalope” – how creative! Will check out Grandeurvision post haste – I hope you had a nice phone visit. 🙂

    • Kathy says:

I loved that art, too, Barbara. The orange picture wasn’t the greatest, but I loved what they were doing with fruit, too. I can picture you and Marianne getting along famously.

  10. Elisa's Spot says:

OOOoooooooo ya new blogging material! I willful and I wiffle and waffle about that blogroll. I have too many, make the page all aclutter. Who cares what blogs that I read? Should I rotate them on and off for new reading fare? Do I want to send people away from my own blog? Do I want to direct their reading by only offering in a day a blog with a message that I–uhm approve of or do NOT approve of? I don’t really have a readership and I think that I am not the best at commenting so, I suppose that I can have the list up to use daily for my morning reading routine. I know that about once a month I do try to go thru the bloglists of the people I am rather a regular clicker, even without commenting. I follow a lot of those.

I hope you enjoyed your call!

    • Kathy says:

So many thoughts about blogrolls, Miss Elisa! I used to use my own blogroll as my reading list, but now I use comments only as a reading guide. Way too many to read otherwise. Every once in a blue moon I go through the blog roll and delete long-departed folks.

  11. Colleen says:

This Canadian comes forth, but only as an appreciative reader of many of the wonderful blogs that you mentioned and as a commentor of (alas) only a few….this Canadian has been know to be somewhat shy at times.

I’m wondering about our infamous *eh*, and if it’s something that only non-Canadians can hear 🙂

    • Kathy says:

I smile thinking of you as shy, Colleen. I used to describe myself as shy. Guess that won’t work any more. Wondering if it’s only Ontarions (?) that use the “eh”? Also interesting that I don’t think of you as a Canadian, probably because you’re living in California. But sorry to have missed you on my list of beloved Canadians.

  12. irenelefort says:

I can imagine how excited you might be. 🙂 Looking forward to finding out if Marianne is really from Canada.

  13. lisaspiral says:

Well, you’re still steps ahead of me as I can’t seem to figure out how to set one up. And no, I’m not there yet but I won’t complain, at least not until it gets so hot and humid everything is annoying – eh.

  14. I’m about 30 blogs behind on updating my blogroll. I’ve decided my summer break from work is when I’ll get around to adding all the new and wonderful blogs I’ve discovered since October (the last time I updated . . . I think.). Every blogger knows this happens and we are always very forgiving. 😉

  15. Tammy says:

Proud to already be on your list. Look forward to getting to know Marianne.

  16. Carol says:

Here’s where I admit I had paid no attention to whether I was on your blogroll. Now I discover I am not. I cannot complain, however, because my blogroll is mostly neglected. I think I updated it once. I’m certain it needs updating again. Maybe later. Or tomorrow. Or whenever I can think to do it when I’m able to do it. That’s when, yes!

    • Kathy says:

Yes, you are, Carol! It’s listed under “Wanderings of an Elusive Mind”, about the fifth from the bottom? You have to scroll down. Do you want me to change the name? Good luck with your updating. Sounds like you’ve got a plan, tee hee.

  17. Joanne says:

It’s so clever of you, the way you have lined up the three leaves and the three birds, those two photos are top of my list of favourites today.

Blog rolls are very quiet little gizmos that sit, unnoticed by us, reading every single word we write. I noticed the cobwebs on mine the other day and will be giving it a good spring clean this weekend!

Isn’t Marianne beautiful? I met her recently (I think Robin introduced us) and have visited her often ever since. You really do have the loveliest friends Kathy! 🙂

    • Kathy says:

Smiling, Joanne, thinking of our cobwebs on our blogrolls. I really should go through and prune and get rid of the dusty ones! (But not as dusty as this house…) I think Marianne is a very beautiful soul. It is a treasure to read her words and listen to her heart. We talked so much about spirituality, as you can imagine!

  18. Dawn says:

I never noticed if I was on your blog roll! But I am honored that I am. I LOVE this photo! A lot. Hope your call went well…I’m sure it did…going over to read her blog now.

    • Kathy says:

Of course you are on my blog roll, Dawn! You are one of my oldest readers, from way back in the outdoor blog unless I’ve forgotten that, too. By “old” I mean longest-reading readers. That sounds better, doesn’t it?

  19. Barb says:

Dear Kathy, You are a sweetheart. I don’t even HAVE a blogroll on my blogs…(only one of which you’ve mentioned I notice on YOUR blogroll…) I surely hope Marianne was from someplace at least close to Canada!

    • Kathy says:

I shall add your other delightful blog to my blogroll ASAP. She was from Ontario, thank goodness. We had a lovely talk, filled with deep spiritual matters, which delighted us both.

  20. Robin says:

Blogrolls can be so difficult to keep up with, and I wonder if they aren’t obsolete now with all the blog subscriptions. To be honest, I think life was simpler when I had to depend on my blogroll to visit other blogs. Not nearly as much email, that’s for sure.

I bet your talk with Marianne was wonderful. She’s one of those bloggers I would love to meet (as are you!). Ontario is just across that big lake up north of me (Lake Erie). Maybe one day…

    • Kathy says:

Robin, I don’t subscribe to very many blogs, preferring instead to visit commenter’s blogs, mostly because I am email-claustrophobic. Too much email completely devastates me. That’s my terrible secret. You, me and Marianne should meet up someday. Someplace in the middle… Wouldn’t that be fun?

  21. My children’s father’s family being of French/Cajun descent ended their sentences with pronouns, i.e. “I’m going to town, me.”

Took a long time for “me” to catch on.

  22. Dana says:

I am terrible at maintaining my blogroll, too. I’ve always tried to keep it short and sweet, but then I feel guilty for omitting many of the blogs I read faithfully…

I hope you had a great in-person conversation with Marianne!
