When will he arrive?

Back when the kids were in college and they both came home to see us…

All you mamas and papas of grown children know how you feel when your young sprouts return to the childhood nest for a spell, don’t you?

You know how your heart sighs in joy, yes, a beloved son or daughter returns!  You scurry around the house, washing sheets, dusting cobwebs, thinking of favorite dishes to make.

You look at the clock.

You wonder:  where is he/she now?  What time will he/she arrive?  Or you wonder when you’ll leave for the airport.  You vacuum.  You anticipate.  Your eyes gleam.

He’ll be home soon!

Yes, dear reader, we await our eldest, a boy named Christopher (or Chris, as the rest of the world calls him).  He arrived in the fine state of Michigan last Wednesday, feeling the breezes of the Great Lakes from the Detroit airport.  His childhood buddy, Ryan, picked him up and took him Downtown and on Thursday (Mama has memorized his itinerary) they drove north, north, north all the way to the Mannistee National Forest for his very own bachelor party!

Chris and Seunghye

Click here if you missed the sentimental 30th birthday post Once upon a Christopher I wrote back in March which probably, yes, probably embarrassed the poor fellow to think his mama would carry on like this in public.  (But, then again, he’s the son of a newspaper columnist.  His father used to write about his bouts with the flu.  My blog is tame compared to that, right?)

Yes, our dear Christopher and Seunghye have invited friends and family to their wedding celebration in San Diego on October 6th, and now both of them have flown east from California for the weekend to Prepare for the Event.

Christopher and Seunghye

Seunghye is in New York City meeting with her maid of honor and our daughter, who is a bridesmaid.  Yesterday, the women shopped for bridesmaid dresses.  They lunched.  They had a very good time, as emails and phone calls revealed.

Chris is still in the forest of upper lower Michigan as of Monday morning. (We Michiganders like to divide our state into three parts:  1)  the urban lower and 2) the woodsy rural upper lower and 3) the wilderness of the Upper Peninsula where your blogger now types.)

Christopher is batching it with maybe six to eight friends.  The celebration includes camping, hiking and canoeing.  (Please do not trust my words.  I am only the very distant mom.  This is only what I THINK is happening.  And I’ve probably said too much, you know how it is, you other moms and dads.)

I wish I was a little bird perched over their campfire.  OK, OK, maybe it’s good that I will only hear the edited version of the exciting Bachelor Party.  We hope no canoes tipped, and if they tipped that everyone survived with only a minor dunking.  We hope everyone behaved, and if they didn’t behave that they all make it to work tomorrow.

Chris & Ryan on one of their many camping trips

My job (at least this is what I think my assignment is):  drive to Marquette tomorrow morning to pick up the soon-to-be-celebrated-groom.  We hope he’ll be able to hitch a ride back to the U.P. with one of his friends.

Christopher will stay with us until Saturday when he flies back west, west, west to San Diego to reunite with his soon-to-be-celebrated-bride and they’ll continue planning all the delicious details of the wedding itinerary.

Am so excited about this upcoming week with our boy (even though it’s the first week of school and I must put in a couple of appearances at work as well).

When’s the last time you’ve seen your grown-up children?  Or, if you’re a grown-up kid, when’s the last time you’ve seen your mom and dad?  (I saw mine back in June if you recall, when we all sang Camptown Ladies to help my dad celebrate his birthday.)

Here’s to families!  Let’s keep celebrating one another!

  1. I feel your joy — you will have a wonderful time. Like your husband, I am a columnist and have made it my life mission to embarrass my kids in my columns (not really but that is what they think). enjoy

  2. Kappy says:

Yes! We know! I spend a large part of summer with my mommy and brudder each year, and it never seems to be enough.

  3. sonali says:

Oh Nice! A wedding’s around the corner! The very thought of weddings make me suddenly feel so excited 😀 Do put up the pictures. I’m quite interested in seeing Kiah’s bridesmaid dress & of course the lovely couple on their wonderful day.
As for now Kathy, I hope you have a nice time with your son. Be happy always.

    • Kathy says:

I wish I could show you the bridesmaid dresses now, but I’m sworn to secrecy, Sonali. I will gladly post pics when we go to San Diego in October…can’t wait! YOU be happy always!

  4. Elisa's Spot says:

Now, why did I think that they already got married?!?! Your list of to-dos and excitement sounds nice, perhaps when they are 22, I will get to do this too, rather than showing up in fire fighting gear?

  5. Susan Derozier says:

I so agree with you Kathy. There is no happier time for me than when I get to see my daughter or one of the grandkids. Alas, it is way too seldom for my liking. Have a fantastic week with your guy!

    • Kathy says:

Hoping that you will see your daughter and/or the grandkids in very short order, Susan! I am a fairy godmother waving a wand…it shall happen! Poof!

  6. bree1972 says:

Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy! When we parents only get to see our “babies” three or four times a year, the time they spend with us is highly cherished. Our oldest is coming with his wife in October – just before we leave to go home – and it will have been six months since I received his last hug – WAY too long. Counting the days!

    • Kathy says:

Bree, you are so lucky to see your loved ones three or four times a year. Chris hasn’t been home in two years (although we got to see him 1 1/2 years ago.) How lucky that you will be able to spend time with your oldest and his wife before you go home! Lucky!

  7. Lori DiNardi says:

Don’t have a family myself, but I’m going home to see Mom soon. Now I know how she feels through your words. Enjoy your time together.

    • Kathy says:

Yep, Lori, now you know how your mama feels. She’s missing you now. We’ll enjoy our time together –WHEN he wakes up from his nap. He’s exhausted after the bachelor party, you know.

  8. Susan D. says:

I’m so happy that Chris(topher) will soon grace your doorstep, or your car, first … and that you’ll have a little time with him at home! I’m smiling that mom-of-grown-kids smile that we all get for ourselves, and each other, when they fly back to the original nest for a bit. I know it will be a wonderful visit!

    • Kathy says:

Hey, Susan D! Yeppers, we’ve had a lovely time thus far, but now he’s snoozing in his childhood bed downstairs, trying to make up for lost sleep after his exciting camping trip. I KNOW you understand everything. Simply everything. 🙂

  9. Oh, I feel your joy. My ‘kids’ (they’ve both reached 30!) don’t read my blog in case they’d be embarrassed. Okay by me, that way I can write about things like, say, empty nests and how too fast time flies. My daughter is on the other coast with two little ones and one on the way – my visits to her are precious and too few. My son lives nearby, and still, his life is busy with three little ones, so each get-together is supremely appreciated. ENJOY!

    • Kathy says:

Ha ha, Roughwighting, I swear my kids wouldn’t read this blog either–except for their prior experience with their father as a newspaper columnist. Chris even read this blog last night at his friend’s house after they got to “civilization”. He was even kindly reassuring his mama that this was OK. You are so lucky to have little ones!! (I want little ones, too, but shhhh, don’t tell anyone, as they are not ready in their lives yet…)

  10. Brenda Hardie says:

Such exciting news Kathy! I’m so happy for Chris(topher) and Seunghye<3 And of course for you too!! I can feel your excitement for your son's arrival already 🙂 And I understand completely. My son, Ben is not that far away but it's far enough that I don't see him very much. Alex (Ben's younger brother) and I spent an overnight trip at Ben's place a couple weeks ago. It was so nice! And I just saw my Dad on Friday. Family is such a gift…I think it's wonderful when we can be together ♥ Have a fantastic time with your son and please tell him Congratulations from me.

    • Kathy says:

I am so excited that Chris is here now under our roof, even though he’s napping in the basement, Brenda. I am glad that Ben, at least, is not so far away. You at least have the opportunity to see your grownup little one. Family is da best. We are lucky…and I shall offer congratulations when and if he ever wakes up. Of course he’ll wake up. We’re going to barbecue!

  11. John Kuttenberg says:

What a fine young man who knows that the best way to start a new family is to begin with the family that he was raised. He understands the chain of family and understands the links to what exists need to be as strong as the new links to be formed. Wishing you a wonderful week ahead.

    • Kathy says:

John, our boy does have the softest heart, he does. He would understand your soft heart, I think. Thank you for the good well wishes! We shall enjoy the rest of the week. He and Barry and another fellow are going fishing on Superior tomorrow.

  12. bearyweather says:

sounds like you are in for an exciting and loving week …. enjoy yourself.

  13. shieram says:

Aww. I suddenly miss home. You sound like my mom and I always love that she cooks my favorite dishes whenever I visit.
Best wishes to your son and his bride-to-be. And Kathy, it’s okay to divulge secrets about your children. We may be embarrassed when our parents do that but somewhere in our hearts, we do love the affection that comes with it. 🙂

  14. Christie Eagan says:

Congratulations on the upcoming wedding. It doesn’t seem like that long ago that you were planning your wedding, I remember it well as I had the pleasure of standing beside you as you said “I Do” to Barry. Enjoy the upcoming week with the eldest child. Such an exciting time in the Drue family…

    • Kathy says:

Christie, are you trying to make me cry? Gosh, it seems 100 years ago when you stood next to me at our wedding. And now our boy will say “I do” to his wife…and, gosh, how those years go by… It is an exciting time. Thank you for stopping by and sharing your thoughts. I always love hearing from you.

  15. sybil says:

    ummmm ….
    errrrr …
she hasn’t left yet … well that’s not true. She lived overseas for a while modelling. Now she and the bf live with me.
I am experiencing the other side of coin … 🙂

    • Kathy says:

I have HEARD about the other side of the coin, Sybil. I have heard that it’s much more common these days. Part of me would like to sample that…the other part would not…enjoy your days…they probably won’t last long. Love!

  16. Joanne says:

Kathy, over the next month, leading up to the wedding, you’ll probably have everyone alternately in floods of tears, and fits of laughter, as you give us all updates on the wedding! I know how you feel…slightly. When my boy (27 years old!) went to the USA for 5 weeks, I was all in a tizz about getting his room cleaned for his homecoming, sheets washed, preparing his favourite food for when he arrived home, rushing off to collect him from the train station after his trip from the airport in Brisbane, and that was just a holiday!! Have a wonderful time with Christopher, and make more memories with him to treasure. 🙂

    • Kathy says:

Joanne, I’m not sure I’ll know anything more about the wedding until we arrive in San Diego on October 3rd! I know you understand a bit about homecomings…they are so bittersweet. We are already having a wonderful time, although he’s napping now after his bachelor party/camping trip. Barbecue on the grill in an hour or two! I should make potato salad but I am responding to comments. 🙂

  17. I’m so happy for you that you get to have your son home for a few days! And a wedding!!! How exciting! 🙂

    • Kathy says:

so exciting, Michaela! It will be a blast to go to San Diego next month. Can’t wait, can’t wait…OK, I can wait because I’m going to enjoy the next five days to the utmost! Thank you.

  18. jeffstroud says:

I smile at your joy and of course humor mixed with concern and letting go. I am not a parent, so I only have a form of empathy for those who are. Plus your sharing your blog allows for us to see and hear what parents go through as their children grow and have lives and loves of their own!

    Joyous!

    • Kathy says:

Jeff, I am glad if you non-parents can get a glimpse of what it’s like when grown children come back to the roost. I figured everyone might resonate with this post because we’ve all been kids ourselves. Love & joy to you as well!

  19. Munira says:

He looks so much like you, doesn’t he?! Congrats to Chris (and his mommy!) on his upcoming wedding! I hope he has a great bachelor party :)) And I hope your spirit gets to be the little birdie 😉
Seems like it’ll be a multicultural wedding….how wonderful! Here’s to celebration! *clinks*

    • Kathy says:

Really, Munira? You think he looks like me? He looks like his daddy, too, because his daddy hardly has any hair, either. He did have a great bachelor’s party and now he’ll be home. A wonderful multi-cultural wedding! I love that the many cultures of our world can learn to blend hearts. *clinks back!*

  20. They look so happy! Enjoy your visit!

  21. lucindalines says:

Oh how great for you to have him at home for a time. Also congrats and best wishes and all of that on the wedding. Such fun it will all be. But yes, it is sooooo great when they come home for however long they stay.

  22. Heather says:

Having just returned home from a trip to our parents, I imagine he’s just as excited to see you as you are to see him. I hope you have a great visit – and a great wedding!

  23. lisaspiral says:

I got to spend Labor Day weekend with my folks, or as Orion likes to say “Up in the North Woods.” My daughter even managed to join us for a day. Her Grandfather has promised to take her deer hunting and they are “practicing”. Orion and his Grandfather marched in the Aitkin parade in support of the local DFL. Mom and I had a quite day at home. Everyone was much happier than if we hadn’t come to visit. As a bonus Karina made ice cream. Have fun with your son.

    • Kathy says:

Oh what a wonderful Labor Day, Lisa! Thank you for sharing it. Grandpas who take their grandkids hunting around these north woods are in high demand, aren’t they? I’ll bet everyone is delighted that you were able to visit.

  24. I agree Miss Kathy, maybe it’s best that you’ll only hear the edited version of the exciting Bachelor Party!

Hula burgers! I’m so excited for you and Barry to get to spend some quality time with Mr. Christopher.

Life is just GRAND! Isn’t it?!

    • Kathy says:

I just typed another response, Ms. Laurie, which shared that the bachelor party seemed actually kind of tame. (What we heard anyway.) The biggest–errr–mistake–was when a certain someone (not Chris) threw a bocce ball and it ricocheted off a tree and slammed into someone’s car. Yikes!

  25. Robin says:

Such a joyful time for you and your family! I think when it comes to adult children, hearing the edited version of some adventures if the best way to go. lol!

I saw my oldest son and his family a little over a week ago. It’s been about a month since I’ve seen my youngest and his wife. I talk to my father every week, but haven’t seen him since July. He’s planning to visit us sometime in the fall. I’m looking forward to it. Mom, of course, I visit all the time, in my heart and memories. 🙂

    • Kathy says:

Ha ha re those “edited” versions, Robin! I think this party was rather tame, except for the bocce ball which smashed into one of the guest’s car. (Yikes!) How wonderful that you’ve seen so many of your loved ones in the past couple of months. We figured it’s been 1 1/2 years since we last saw Chris, and two years since he’s been home. We talk all the time, though, so we’re fast in one another’s heart.

  26. Stacy Lyn says:

I’m a grown-up daughter who last saw her mom in May. (Wrote about it here:http://stacyallbritton.com/2012/07/07/we-took-mama-to-normandy-on-mothers-day/)

I also have a grown-up daughter and I will see her Friday!!! (First time since April.) ❤

  27. Carol says:

Oh yes, I am very familiar with that heart-flutter and flurry of activity when it is time for one or both of the kids to arrive! The anticipation, the appreciation, the joy and the heart that swells. It is a very very good part of this life.

    • Kathy says:

I have loved hearing of the joy you feel when your children are around, Carol. I can sense how very special they are to you. A very very good part of this life, indeed.

  28. Dawn says:

Wonderful! My Mom used to love the anticipation almost more than the actual visit! Well not more..but you know what I mean. I think we had the best relationship with Mom and Dad when we were all adults. It was really special to be so close. Enjoy your family! 🙂

    • Kathy says:

Dawn, I simply cannot imagine what it will be like when my parents have passed on. The thought makes me want to cry right now. Thank you for reminding us to appreciate our parents even more. Deep love to the “orphan” part of you…

  29. Congratulations to the happy couple! I hope all goes according to plan. 🙂

No matter how old a child is or how far away they live, a parent never stops worrying about them and praying that all is well with them.

As someone’s child, I always felt a little guilty that I never visited my folks as often as I should have, and now that they’re gone, the pangs hit more sharply. I do take some comfort in knowing that I was there every day for my mom in her last week and that we had celebrated a special event just before Dad’s sudden heart attack.

Enjoy your role as Mother of the Groom. There’s so much less pressure than being Mother of the BRIDE! 🙂

    • Kathy says:

I hope so, too, withershins! And, yes, a parent is always a parent no matter how old the child. I know my parents still think of me as a wee one. 🙂

It is good that you were there for your mom before her passing, and also present with your dad before his heart attack. I think perhaps we might always feel regret that we were not there more often, but Life often dictates how frequently we can visit.

As for the Mom of the Groom rather than Bride: yep! You’ve got it! Much easier role!

  30. dearrosie says:

Congratulations. I hope one time you come visit your Chris in San Diego you’ll find you have some spare time to come surprise me at my cash register in L.A!
We have a lot in common: my kids live far away, my son is also 30, my daughter just got married (I don’t blog every day so haven’t written about it).

    • Kathy says:

Wouldn’t that be so fun, Rosie? I don’t think it will happen on this trip to California, though. There are so many family members coming to San Diego; it’s probably going to be quite a busy few days! That is so cool that we have a lot in common. Congratulations on your daughter’s marriage! Does she live nearby?

  31. Colleen says:

Kathy, so many special times and precious moments as you all prepare for October 6th. Congratulations to all of you and a big hug for your new daughter-in-law!

    • Kathy says:

I need a new dress, Colleen. And I am not one of those shopper-type people. It doesn’t have to be a fancy dress. It’s not going to be one of those super-duper fancy weddings. But I need to find a dress. Soon. I am counting on the Universe to materialize one. The exact perfect right one. Hold that thought, OK? 🙂
