Blinded by the light

Blinded by the light

Apparently, once I wrote a blog post called Blinded by the light.

It must have been a long, long time ago because the memory of writing this is now covered in darkness.

On Monday morning I quickly signed into WordPress before going to work, re-read the previously written blog about Dying on Facebook, and skipped over to the stats page to discover who might have visited previously.

Turns out four people had visited this ancient long-ago Blinded by the Light post.

I noted it, duly forgot, and headed to work.

A deer grazing by the side of the road caught the bright glare of the car’s headlights and stood frozen.

Blinded

Simultaneously the radio began to play the song:  “Blinded by the light…”

It’s moments like these that we feel the presence of the Divine, don’t we?

We feel like something beyond our rational mind might–just might–be in control.

Or perhaps that Something just dances with us.

Sometimes we can play with the hidden messages embedded within the synchronicity.  That’s what I used to do for years.  Would analyze what the Universe attempted to get through this thick skull with this unexpected message.

For example:  You need to be blinded by the Light of the divine, Kathy.  Wake up!   Or:  you are so blinded by some light, you had better blink.  Or:  Pray for those who need light in their lives.  Or:  Pray for deer.  Or:  How many years are you going to remain blind?  Or:  Open to the dark as well as the light.  Or, Or, Or!

Now I just smile and realize that, in some ways, it’s just Row, Row, Row Your Boat~~Life is but a dream.

Blinded by the light of fireworks and then playing with the photo by inverting colors

I have kinda been “blinded by the light of creativity” lately.  There has been this vigorous energy to share, share, share!  Write, write, write!  Day after day this impulse arises and I indulge it.

I ceased even to worry about what others might think–how they might think this is “all too much” or they “can’t keep up with reading” or whatever the mind is projecting.  Then *almost* ceased to worry about how I can’t keep up with other people’s blogs when I’m creating so incessantly.

The usual pattern is write, write, write, write for days and weeks and maybe months at a time and then…mercifully or unmercifully…everything goes silent and it’s time to skip off to a quieter retreat, a quieter fallow time where the mind can cease telling stories.  (Maybe even soon?  Who knows?)

Rock on!

I’ve always admired people who aren’t conflicted about when and whether to share.  There’s always a part of me that wants to share, share, share and another part which wants to embrace quiet and silence and solitude.  Will the two parts of self ever fully resolve?  Does it even matter?

We’re all blinded by the light of our own passions at times, aren’t we?  Like a deer in the headlights we can but stare mesmerized at what Life presents us every shining moment.

What light shines in your eyes these days?  Have you experienced any magical synchronicities?

  1. Susan Derozier says:

Kathy – I had goosebumps reading this, just as I always do at these moments I call moments of wonder. I had a deer experience as well when I was driiving back downstate from Superior. I had the flash thought “oh I didn’t get to see any deer this trip.” Knowing how these things work for me, I immediately added the thought…but I don’t want to see them in the road. Moments later I rose up over a small hill to see three deer in the meridian of the road. Excited, I yelled out “thank you.” As if to assure me it was no accident, a blue heron flew right out in front of my car. The blue heron has always been my messenger and I could share many stories about it. I knew for certain it was no accident.
I also had a thought at your “need to share” in that aren’t we all actually a part of the whole and wouldn’t sharing be a way to connect with our other parts? Just a thought.

    • Kathy says:

I was hoping others would share their goosebump moments of synchronicity, too, Susan. I love that the blue heron confirmed that it was no accident. One of those moments out of time… And, yes, I often think about sharing as a way to connect with our other parts. (And the part that doesn’t want to share is one of those parts, too.)
      🙂

  2. I love synchronicity! I watch for it, find it magical, and – like you – sometimes try to analyze the message. It’s like fitting a puzzle together…a feeling of, “oh, life does make sense”, when often it seems the opposite is true. Probably there are always patterns, we just aren’t large enough or far enough away to see them…most of the time. Thanks, Kathy!

    • Kathy says:

Magical synchronicity! Glad you enjoy it as well, Cindy. Life makes sense. That seems to be the larger message, doesn’t it? Sometimes we can’t see the forest for the trees.

  3. “I love it when a plan comes together!” (A-Team) 🙂

Whether it is a congruence of similar thoughts or ideas or actions, there is a certain pattern and beauty to life when it occurs. I loved the inverted photo, by the way. It reminds me of a splash of paint on a canvass. May your light always shine brightly so we can feel the warmth of your wisdom. 🙂

    • Kathy says:

I like that word “congruence”, Susan. The pattern and beauty of it! And, oh, you like the inverted photo? It was fun playing around to create it. Thanks for your wisdom, too.

  4. Val says:

Usually when synchronicity happens to me I know that the gates are opening – gates of creativity, gates of imagination. Much of the time I’m closed off to so much and then the synchronicity is like a beacon. It doesn’t even matter to me what the ‘messages’ are saying, just that a part of me has reopened.

I’m glad this has happened to you, Kathy. Enjoy it! 🙂

    • Kathy says:

Val, I like the feel of that assessment. Of gates opening. (A friend posted a blog this morning about doors and windows. Perhaps these are just signs of doors and windows opening.) I like that this beacon exists. May we all continually reopen to that which we closed shut.

  5. bonnie says:

Life is full of mystery and wonder. Any moment of any day a serendipitous moment may happen. I have learned to cherish those moments, and in the days of darkness, I recall the wonder, and my spirits begin to lift. Beautiful post, Kathy. Once again. You have been given a wonderfull gift, and I am happy whenever you share.

  6. susanblake says:

    Hi Kathy,
I’m just sure synchronicity is divinely orchestrated – cuz wow, it sure feels that way, doesn’t it? Just had it happen yesterday – and I felt the woo-woo thing and a very clear message like a tweet from God or something. Wish He’d tweet more often!
    Hugs,
    SuZen

  7. A bit eerie but I think the deer beside the road is beautiful and it seems uncanny how things went for you that day. I like your writing style a lot.

    Yvonne

    • Kathy says:

It was wonderful, Yvonne. It’s funny, I don’t even think of these things as eerie any more. Now they just feel like gracious gifts. I am SO glad you have been stopping by and sharing your thoughts! Thank you so very much.

  8. John Kuttenberg says:

Synchronicity, is almost magical! I love suZen’s phrase, “a tweet from God”. So are your poll watchers out doing exit interviews today? Does it look like you are going to beat your vote count from the last election?

    • Kathy says:

John, I was not sure I was going to respond to individual comments until you synchronistically came by and asked about the election. Now I HAD to reply! There was a couple challenging incidences politically during the past couple of years and I would be VERY surprised to beat my vote count from last election. I am only hoping it all goes well. It’s funny…I do tend to forget about being on the ballot on election day. Thanks for the reminder! (But, yes, we voted this morning. I should get two votes, ha ha…)

  9. monicadevine says:

Mama always told me not to look into the eyes of sun…but, Mama…that’s where the fun is!

    • Kathy says:

My mama told me that, too, Monica! Have you ever heard, though, that you can squint into the sun and get vitamins through your eyes? Who knows if that’s true, but a wise woman told me that once.

  10. Heather says:

I think I tend to miss moments of synchronicity because I am (sometimes probably too much so) very science-y and rational. I very much appreciate hear others’ tales, and will sometimes even get goosebumps and be genuinely amazed. And like in your case, surely there’s a message there, even if it is “Row, Row, Row Your Boat~~Life is but a dream,” but if that had happened to me I would have thanked coincidence that I didn’t hit the deer and laughed at the song. I’m grateful there are more types of folks in the world than just my type, and I’m glad to meet them 🙂

    • Kathy says:

Yes, Heather, I suspect science-y and rational might keep some of these experiences at bay. You kind of have to click your red heels together and repeat, “I believe, I believe, I believe.” (I think I mixed fairy tales in that last sentence.) And THANK GOODNESS the world is full of all different kinds of folks!

  11. I LOVE that kind of synchronicity! I’m drawing a complete blank about one of my own. However, Sara and I getting together with our mothers having been dear friends without us even knowing–that was synchronicity, I suppose. Our meeting had nothing to do with them. My mother even spoke at Sara’s mom’s memorial service. Doesn’t get any better than that, does i?
    Hugs,
    Kathy

  12. Brenda Hardie says:

Kathy…I believe it’s the magical part of life when our eyes are opened to the wonder all around us. And not only the wonder of it all but how seemingly unrelated “pieces” fit so perfectly together and suddenly everything makes sense! I love moments like that!
By the way…I love that song..”Blinded By The Light”…:D

  13. Lori DiNardi says:

The rays of sun in that first photo jump right out of my computer screen. Awesome. I too, dilemma on whether or not to share. I related to this, and especially the ‘row, row, row your boat, life is but a dream.” Thanks for deciding to share this one.. 😉

    • Kathy says:

Lori, I actually just looked at that photo a few minutes ago and had to squint. No kidding! Glad you understand about the sharing not-sharing dilemma. Maybe one day we’ll figure it out to our satisfaction, do you think?

  14. Synchronicity often plays a role in my life, but I’m sometimes not as alert as I should be about them. All I know, is I appreciate your sharing, as it always makes me think. That’s pretty valuable, wouldn’t you say?

    • Kathy says:

Lisa, it seems like some times in my life synchronicity happens a lot. Other times, not as much. Maybe it’s when we’re flowing more, or something, who knows? I am glad that this sharing makes you think. No I am more than glad. I am touched.

  15. lisaspiral says:

In my book (Manifest Divinity) I talk about synchronicity being the side effect of connection with the Divine. I suspect that’s exactly what you are describing. Blinded by the light, like Paul on the road to Damascus perhaps. Or maybe just the bright sun or moon glorious symbols of the presence of the ancient Gods. Walk in beauty Kathy and enjoy the synchronicity.

    • Kathy says:

Lisa, yes, it sounds like we’re talking about the same thing. Hoping you also walk in beauty and may synchronicity walk alongside of you at times.

  16. Stacy says:

You experienced a magical moment, indeed, Kathy. I don’t know if it was the Universe’s divine intervention or curious happenstance. Either way, if it brings a smile to your face and lightens your soul, how or why it happened is not germane to anything. Take the magic when it is offered to you. ❤

  17. Kathy – I’m back home (have just woken up from 12 hours of much-needed, deep sleep). I’m so glad to start my day with a refreshing, thought-filled “dose of Kathy.”

  18. Munira says:

I think yesterday’s blog post was inspired by a magical moment. I was singing along to ‘When doves cry’ in the car (as you know) driving down a quiet side street, and there were a couple of pigeons sitting right in the middle of the road, and JUST as I was saying the words ‘when doves cry’, the pigeons just flew up!
Don’t you just love serendipity? Blog away my friend! Share away! We will lap up every word 🙂

    • Munira says:

And oh I love the word ‘fallow’….just wanted you to know that 🙂

    • Kathy says:

Oh yes, Munira, you had a most magical moment indeed! By the way, I am now wondering the difference between the word “synchronicity” and “serendipity”. I think I use them interchangeably. and how very lovely that you will lap up EVERY word! I am flying up in the sky in delight along with the pigeons. 🙂

  19. Now I will have to download the song onto my iPhone today so I can get it out of my head! LOL

    • Kathy says:

I am so sorry to have done that to you, Scott. It is kind of shameful when someone puts a song in your head and it can’t be dislodged. Today’s song in my head is from Oklahoma–The Ranchers and the Cowboys should be friends. Do not Google it and do not listen under any circumstances.

  20. Karma says:

I had a synchronicity like that in April. I wrote about it on the blog – on the way home from our very long day of travel home from the cruise, “The Long Way Home” played on the car radio when we were less than a mile from home. I remember being the only one who appreciated it since I was driving and my three passengers were asleep or nearly so. I’ve often wondered if those synchronicities (that’s a tough word to type!) mean anything, like you have, or if they are just happy accidents meant to give a little smile to those who are willing to find them.

    • Kathy says:

I think I remember reading about it, Karma. *Maybe* We may never know whether these mean anything, but I am 98.6% convinced they are wee gifts from the Divine. Maybe to wake us up out of your busy-ness and thoughts a little bit.

  22. Colleen says:

I have had two such moments recently. A large meteor arced into the atmosphere and exploded into pieces right before our eyes. One of the most amazing things I’ve seen. And a beautiful old coastal redwood allowed me to see its energy? orbs? …. hundreds of them up and down its trunk and through it’s branches. Both were profoundly wonderous events (to me) that I’m still pondering : )

    • Kathy says:

Colleen, that is truly amazing. A meteor explosion right before your eyes? And orbs? My heart is fluttering in gratitude that you could see these things! Blessings…and may you glimpse many more profound sharings like these.

  23. Barb says:

That was truly spooky, Kathy. Well, maybe spooky is the wrong word. When I try to make sense of it I just get more amazed.

    • Kathy says:

Barb, I’m not sure our minds are meant to make sense of such things. Perhaps our hearts are simply “meant” to thrill with the interconnectedness of it all… Amazed with you.

  24. Joanne says:

Gosh Kathy, these things happen to me all the time! Just this week my son asked me one morning if I had any first cousins in Australia and I reminded him of one that I have who lives a few kilometres away but I rarely see…so what happened?….I bumped into her and her husband that afternoon….Then on Thursday my daughter had a surprise visit from her first ballet teacher, who called in to see how she was going these days. Yesterday at the dentist, who should be there but Hayley’s ballet teachers mums best friend, who I knew and hadn’t seen for years! We create with our minds, just think it and The Universe provides it.

I love, love, love your deer story, and Blinded by the Light coming on the radio. What a special moment. 🙂

    • Kathy says:

Oh what fun synchronistic happenings you’ve experienced, too, Joanne. It just feels like our thoughts and creation and manifestation kind of dance together at times. If I put any effort into trying to create, it usually doesn’t happen. Love the Universe and it’s mysteries! Thank you for sharing your serendipity.

  25. Marianne says:

It is awesome when synchronicity occurs, Kathy. One day, not too long ago, I received a call from someone who told me their organization would contribute funds to a program I enrolled in. After I hung up the phone, I went to the local convenience store where I made a purchase. While at the cash I decided to ask for a $2 poker play (I never do this) and I won $50 bucks on the spot. Must have been my lucky day! 🙂

    • Kathy says:

It sounds like you were in the *light*, Marianne, and the Universe responded with joy. I am not really sure HOW it works, but there is a way that it works. Maybe we won’t ever be able to figure out a method, but I think it has something to do with intent, flow and energy. Thank you for sharing your wonderful story!

  26. Robin says:

Life seems to be a series of synchronistic events lately. I was resisting, but Life kept pushing and I’m taking the hint. 🙂

Lovely post, Kathy. I’m torn between sharing and retreating, too. I’d love to go off on a long retreat in some beautiful spot in the mountains or at the beach where I would meditate, practice yoga, eat healthful and nourishing foods, and just be for a while. Maybe I should play the lottery…

    • Kathy says:

Robin, that was my Big Dream, too. To get away from it all and retreat. But I knew that if I couldn’t do it “here” then it would be harder still to integrate the retreat once I returned. Somehow it feels like it has to happen here… (However, if you win the lottery, please send enough here and I will go on retreat with you and promise to be silent!)

  27. Reggie says:

I too love these moments of synchronicity, Kathy – it’s like a confirmation that life can be quite magical and extraordinary, if you’re open to seeing and recognising the moments.

    • Kathy says:

Thank you for reading this–which prompted me to re-read it, and now I can remember that this little synchronicity happened, Reggie. Love these moments, too!
