Sum-sum-summertime!

Sum-sum-summertime!

Yesterday I vetoed the on-line world.

Almost.  Did not visit Facebook or WordPress or even my personal email.  (Did visit email and Internet at work.  One must, you know, if one seeks to retain one’s job.)

Peas

Peas

It proved a worthwhile sabbatical.  I prophesied a break until next Tuesday to my husband–if not until the end of time–but he told me I had 34 emails this morning, so just had to peek.

Lake Superior beach

We had another six inches of fluffy snow last night and I have a looooong weekend with nothing much to do….so must make a confession.  Lean close.  I am blogging out of sheer boredom.  Perhaps even Cabin Fever blogging.  Am sooooo ready for March to hang up its snowshoes, but they’re predicting another possible storm early this week!

Girls at Pow Wow

Girls at Pow Wow

Harumph.  So we house-bound folks buried in snow must find something entertaining to do.  What shall we do?  (When we’re bored, you know, it’s not usually the fault of having nothing to do.  It’s that we don’t want to do anything that we’ve done repeatedly for the past four months of snow. We don’t want to walk on the road.  We don’t want to watch another movie.  We don’t want to go to another coffee shop.  We don’t want to read a book, visit a friend, measure the snowdrifts.  We don’t want to put on our snowshoes, thank you.  We don’t want to ice fish, don’t you even suggest it!)

Green grass. (I'm sure no one was complaining about lawn mowing!)

Green grass. (I’m sure no one was complaining about lawn mowing!)

In a fit of pique (don’t you love that word?) I took the camera outside and took snow photos, thinking perhaps to show you the depth of our drifts.  However, am frowning at said photos still in camera and don’t want to upload them.  It would be like approving of the snow, don’t you think?

I don’t approve.  Do you?

Visiting family. Point Abbaye, be still my frozen heart.

Visiting family. Point Abbaye, be still my frozen heart.

Instead, I have been viewing old photos from 2009-2012 and determining which of the children to delete.  (I don’t mean my actual children; I mean the photo-children.)  How does one decide which photos to toss into the recycle bin?  Isn’t it the hardest thing?

All pictures tell stories.  Some personal stories, some family and friend stories, some artistic stories, some seasonal stories.  Have tossed 400 photo-stories thus far this morning in some sort of spring cleaning fit, photos never before seen on any Kathy blogs!  (Although some of the photos, perhaps, are close replicas.)

Summer reflections

Summer reflections

If my mood continues thus, another 400 photo children may go. Begone, you memories!  Into the garbage.  Ms. Ellie, the laptop computer, is reaching advanced old age.  She’s so advanced, in fact, that sometime soon we may have to ditch her as well.

I think I shall liberally salt and pepper this post with some ancient photos from 2009 which missed the dreadful cut.  They’ve been saved by some force of nature.

In addition, all the photos reveal summertime splendor.  (Ha, Winter!  We’ll get back atcha yet…)

I do understand souls who get Seasonal Affective Disorder.  I’m exceptionally fortunate this year that Winter has progressed so smoothly without any inner despair.  Until recently. (And don’t you all be fussing.  I could be singing by supper.  Or maybe in time for lunch.  Except it’s snowing even harder right now.)

Waterfall

Waterfall

Will not, as Jimmy Buffett sings, Shoot Six Holes in My Freezer due to a bad case of Cabin Fever.  Have not even contemplated Boat Drinks.  Yet.

No, instead, will just go shovel some more snow…

Let's remember this advice, shall we?

About Kathy

I live in the middle of the woods in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Next to Lake Superior's cold shores. I love to blog.

Ah yes. Here in Norwood Ohio crocuses are blooming. I wish I could send them to the U P. fountainpen

  2. Elisa says:

OOOOOOOOOOOOO I like the reflections and the waterfall images!! I have been cleaning my media player. I held onto things for years because my friend Vince, the one who died of colon cancer, tried to get me to recall and to remember music. ha, he ended up saying, damn yup you are just broken…some of the music I kept as they were his favorites, though I never really listen to them. I am making it ‘easier’ for me to remove images as I sort and move them by postings on the photography blog and my blog blog one.

Last year, here on the St. Paddy’s Day parade, the temperature hit 79 degrees!! Today, it is snowing! I’m heating up frozen chicken soup and going back to bed to read. I can hear the pipes, the parade is a block away so I can snuggle in the warm and not miss out!

  3. Spring will come. It will! “There’s no place like spring. There’s no place like spring…” Tap those green sparkling shoes together and see what happens!

    Hugs

    Nicole

Kathy, I’m smiling, thinking about cabin fever and Jimmy Buffet and how maybe this is a universal thing this time of year, even when the grass is green and the geraniums are blooming and you live in California. Glad your freezer is safe for now and that you’ll be feeling the Florida sun on your face soon. xo

  5. I am in a spring mood–but winter seems not to agree here–only put three holes in my freezer

  6. john says:

    F-L-O-R-I-D-A, Florida, yes FLORIDA!!!

  7. Karma says:

Ah! Summertime! It seems so very far away right now, yet in the blink of an eye it will be here, and then be over before we’ve had the chance to truly appreciate it – although I’m doing much better remembering to appreciate those precious days.
I have blogged from boredom too. I wonder if I should be doing some photo sorting too. My ancient laptop has been threatening to go to that electronics place in the sky as well.

  8. Barb says:

I sure got a chuckle out of this one..spring fever is getting me here in southern Ohio…and it has been a mild winter. None-the-less, I have early spring peas soaking in the kitchen window to “plug” into my raised beds tomorrow. Hope I am not pushing the season!

  9. bearyweather says:

I went out this morning to take more snow pictures, too … nothing else out there to take pictures of. The difference today was that the sun was actually shining … sunshine makes all the difference when living in a snowy white world.

  10. Well it has been super foggy here for the past 7 hours with no sunshine in sight and while my crocus are through the ground, they are not yet blooming. However my Christmas cactus has 7 blooms on it! On a bright side, we are going out with friends tonight to a St Patricks Day party and a local bar and grill….. I need to purge pictures, too. Do I need 7 shots of my grandaughter running the same hurdle race at her first track meet? How about just one at the finish line? not fun, though

  11. Dana says:

I will think of you when we hike to some canyon pools this afternoon, Kathy. It has been so hot (unbearably hot!) and so dry (amazingly dusty and dry!) here, so I will hold you in my thoughts and send some of that extra warmth over to Michigan.

  12. This past summer, I tried going through all my photos and deleting some, as my old laptop was nearly full. I found that even the bad photos told the story of my life, where I had been, what I was doing, what I saw, and ended up deleting very few. It isn’t like they’re children as you describe them, but I still couldn’t bring myself to dump them. Instead, I bought a 1Tb external hard drive for about $100, and I’m storing most of my photos on that. My old laptop seems to like it, as it’s much faster again. Just an idea.

  13. Brenda Hardie says:

Kathy…I share in your winter doldrums. So, this week while Alex is home for spring break, we’re changing things up a bit. Spending time together, playing board games, working on a birdhouse, doing some cooking and baking, and he’s even teaching me how to play one of the Wii video games! And like always, I’ll be doing some cleaning—a never ending job. And yep…looks like another snowstorm is heading here too. Not sure if we’ll get much snow or mostly ice…too early to tell yet.
I love your pictures! It must be difficult deciding which ones to toss…I do that sometimes and I also send many to a jump drive to be burned onto a disk…that way I don’t have to scan them in again.
Hope you’re feeling a bit brighter, Kathy! ♥

  14. dorannrule says:

Sounds like you are on the ragged edge! There are those lamps out there that shed something similar to sunlight into your room! On the other hand, throwing out hundreds of your photo children could do the trick too. I do love getting organized. The woman made of stone is a good one – reflects your mood right? Think of all the little daffodils struggling to grow through! Think Spring. They say if your thoughts are positive, you will attract what you are thinking of. Your post is funnnnny. Your post is sad. I wish you sunshine soon. 🙂

  15. dawnkinster says:

Sunshine is coming, I just know it! Meanwhile we will try to enjoy the snow that we received as well. All things in their own time.

  16. Stacy says:

Mmmm…..I don’t know. I suppose I would be ready for the end of winter if we had winter down here. Changes of seasons is good, even though I’m rarely ready for change! ❤

  17. Lori D says:

The 3 ‘L’s’ quote is my mother-in-law’s favorite. Everything in her house says it. When growing up in Chicago, after Christmas I was done with winter. By February I wanted to crawl out of my skin, let alone March. Ack! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, January through March is the only time I like living in Florida. Hang in there, Kathy, soon you’ll be here too.

  18. P.j. grath says:

We had those sweet little edible-podded peas for supper last night, and I had to hold each one up to the light and look through the delicately veined pod to the little peas within. Aren’t they wonderful?

  19. Heather says:

I hate to say it out loud, but even I am weary of winter. And I also don’t really *want* to go for a walk, but the sun is shining so I think I *must.* We also got snow last night – about 4 inches when they said 1! – but I think/hope I can get away with not so many layers. Fear not – crocuses will be here before we know it…I just know they will 🙂

  20. Elisa says:

GUESS WHAT GUESS WHAT!?!?! We got giant fluffy snow, that looks and feels just like the first snow that clumps onto all surfaces and looks like cotton all nice and clean! The sidewalks are all melty so it’s not a pain! Snow tends not to be my favorite thing, but for some reason I got rather excited over it.

  21. bonnie says:

I like the laugh often advice. It is good for your health. I am glad that the above photos didn’t get tossed, because I very much enjoyed looking at them. Beautiful!

  22. Sybil says:

Woke this morning to see an inch or so of snow decorating the trees. It was so pretty. Did I get out my camera to capture the beauty ? Nope. I just cursed the trees and their pretty coating. I feel your pain girlfriend, I feel your pain.

  23. I am so lucky Kathy! We don’t get enough wintertime to fall into the doldrums. We get cold, yes. For about a month and a half. And yes, there will still be a frozen day or two. But this past week we’ve been balmy with trees showing the first signs of buds. You should come visit!

  24. Inese Poga Art Gallery says:

You could try to paint the spring. We’ve been painting it for almost a month now, might be even 6 weeks already. That really helps because painting takes away wherever you allow it to.

  25. I understand your pain. After living in CA for 16 years, we moved to New England for 10. Ten winters of almost shooting the freezer every March. Actually, 10 winters of almost shooting myself. 😦 No, not that bad, but when it snows in March, all hope of summer disappear. I remember when we planted tomatoes the 3rd week of May, and the ‘old timers’ laughed at us. Sure enough, two days later….it snowed. ACccccckkkkk. Hang in there, green grass just just around the (long) bend.

  26. The good thing about late snow in Michigan: Kathy posts unintended blogs. 🙂

    Love those peas in pod.

  27. If the luck of the Irish is with us today, we may just reach 32 balmy degrees. More snow is supposed to arrive tomorrow. Like you, I’m done. Finished, Kaput! Hence, I loved looking at the GREEEEEEEN in your photographs. Thank you!

  28. AnnieR says:

Love, love, love the woman of stones photo… And, I’m over, over, over winter. We had that one lovely teaser day where it was warm enough to be out with no jacket, and then right back to rain, sleet, snow and a very bad case of crabbiness. My crocuses are trying mightily to poke their heads thru the snow but I fear they are about to cry uncle. Me too…

  29. Sara says:

Cabin fever is finally getting to me too. I totally get how it makes you not in the mood to do anything, even if it would be enjoyable otherwise. Today I went to the day job and the air was a brisk 7 degrees F. It’s the end of March! Well, hang in there.

Also, I just LOVE the picture of peas!

  30. Reggie says:

Hang in there, Kathy, I’m sure that spring is just around the corner for you. Love the girls at the pow wow photo – so colourful, the perfect antidote to white snow. Actually, all your photos. 😉
