Who wants to win a pint of maple syrup?

Wanting to send this maple syrup to you.

Wanting to send this maple syrup to you.

Dear Friends,

This week I bought three pints of maple syrup. My friend, Patsy, and her family tapped the sap and boiled to create this delicious treat.

After reading yesterday’s comments from so many of you who unabashedly welcomed me back to the blogging world, I decided it might be nice to send you all some oh-so-sweet maple syrup.

However, sigh, that might bankrupt your blogger, so I came up with another plan.  One lucky reader shall receive the syrup to drizzle on oatmeal,  hazelnut pancakes and popcorn.  (Yes, last night, to my husband’s great chagrin, I drizzled about a teaspoon on my popcorn.  To die for, readers!)

Here are your sweepstakes rules:  You must have commented on this blog at least twice in the past year.  (This shall prevent fly-by lovers of syrup from snagging the prize!) If you’ve commented at least twice, please tell me you’d love the maple syrup in the comment section of this post and I shall put your name in a winter chook (Yoopers, or residents of the Upper Peninsula call winter caps or hats “chooks”) and shall–with intense ceremony–draw the name of the lucky winner.

Oh–this contest is limited to readers from the U.S. and Canada due to the aforementioned bankruptcy possibility.  Will draw the name on May 10th and announce the lucky winner of Lake Superior Maple Syrup.

Can’t wait to see who wins!

Excuse me.  Breakfast with maple syrup awaits…

About Kathy

So sweet of you to think of all of us! That stuff is darn expensive !

  2. Ha, ha, Jeff, literally sweet! Gosh, can I enter and have the syrup sent to my mom’s house in Kentucky? I will be going home in about a month and can bring it back with me–if I were to win. We can’t get the real thing here.

    Hugs from Ecuador,
    Kathy

    • Kathy says:

Kathy, that is a perfect solution! You are entered. In fact all of my dear commenters with a secret U.S. address are game. *grin* Oh it will be fun to see who wins!

  3. tthomp75T says:

YUM, I would LOVE a Pint, haven’t had fresh tapped in a very long time. Welcome back to blogging Kathy!!

  4. rehill56 says:

Cute idea Ms. Lake Superior Spirit.  Can we set a date to meet?  I will forget everything I want to talk to you about if I wait much longer. LOL.

Love your blogging.  Hugs to you.  I love waking up each morning to less snow piles!  Almost all gone.

    Ruth

PS Thanks for being the produce producer last time!

    • Kathy says:

Let’s set a date to get together, Ruth. I would like that! You are right–we’ll forget half of what we want to talk about. Email or call and tell me when you’re free. How about this upcoming week? P.S. Hurray for those melting snow piles!

  5. I am not shy when if comes to Maple syrup and would love to compare the Michigan version to our local taps–so toss my name in your winter hat and if I forgot to comment yesterday it is because I am tasked for time of late–but I welcomed you back in my heart and mind!

  6. Oh, Boy!!! Fresh maple syrup…. 😀 Yes, yes, yes!!!

  7. dorannrule says:

Oooh! I have never had “fresh” maple syrup. Please put me in the chook! 🙂

    • Kathy says:

So glad you want to play, Dor! Your name is in the chook. Well, not literally yet. I shall have to find the perfect chook to do the job in a fair way. *grin*

  8. Barb says:

I would love to win the maple syrup, Kathy. And I just removed the “chook” I was wearing to mow my overgrown yard..it felt mighty fine on this chilly morning.

    • Kathy says:

Barb, are you still needing to wear chooks down in your neck of the woods? I was hoping it was mid-summer down there by now. Our grass hasn’t even thought of growing yet. It’s still grumbling at the snow piles–which, I must say, are almost gone. Your name shall be in the chook!

  9. Carol says:

What a wonderful treat! You are a generous soul for certain.

  10. Elisa says:

Yum!! My amish provider of the yearly maple syrup supply was present at the farmer’s market this morning!! I have had to go 2 months without it. (wails and gnashes–what is a gnash anyway?) I am very excited by the syrup, however his mother stated that the sap wasn’t running like it was last year and that they have a lesser supply. She then laughed at the dismay that must have crossed my face. lol

I do not need to win syrups. I just like to comment.

Thinking about running through the snow to the sauna in chooks and gutchies.

    • Kathy says:

I know you don’t need to win the syrup, Elisa, but don’t you want to, just for fun? Let me know if you change your mind. The more entries, the better! As for what is gnashing…that is such a good question. I imagine it’s like when one grinds ones teeth. And gutchies? At a loss with that one!

  11. What a neat idea! Since I won (even there was no contest) the Trenary toast, I think someone else should win! Maple syrup is such a treat, for those who are lucky enough to find the real thing! Good luck to all the entrants….

    • Kathy says:

I was gonna say–Was there really a Trenary Toast contest?–when the story started trickling back in memory. You got the Trenary Toast just because you liked it or mentioned it or something…? Anywho, I want you to think long & hard before you refuse to enter this contest, Linda. The Universe may WANT you to win and may be pouting that you are not complying. Grin.

  12. Kathy – Oh how FUN to potentially win the-real-deal Maple Syrup. Please enter my name in a winter chook — I would love the maple syrup!

As an aside…we are loving (absolutely loving!) Boise, Idaho. Today we’re going to the botanical gardens (we live less than 2 miles away).

    • Kathy says:

I am so thrilled that you’re going to play, Laurie! Hip hip hooray! If you win the maple syrup…will I win a trip to the Boise Botanical Gardens? No, no, Kathy, that was not a fair question to ask. 🙂

  13. Robin says:

I would LOVE (♥♥♥) some maple syrup, Kathy! Please put my name in the hat. One of the things I miss about Ohio is the maple syrup. We used up the last of ours over the winter. I miss seeing the taps on the trees, too, but we have other things here that make up for it.

    • Kathy says:

Your name shall be in the hat, Robin! I simply can not even imagine that you’re in summer-mode already. Does it means that it still exists and that it might one day visit us? It will be so fun to see who wins and I am already promising myself that I will not be too sad that everyone didn’t win…

  14. Mary Lou Knapke says:

    Michigan maple syrup!!
    Wonderful!!!!!!!

I hope you will include my
    Name with all the others
    For a chance !

    I got carried away
    I hit something
    And my entry
    Is twice !!!!!!
    Or three times!
    So very sorry!!!!!
    I smile though
    One chance is wonderful
    Thanks!!!!
    Fountainpen

    • Kathy says:

Dear Fountainpen, you really made me laugh with your three entries. I can see SOMEONE is carried away by this contest! In the chook your name goes. But only once. Not three times. 🙂

  17. Karma says:

I’m not a maple syrup girl (shocking, right? lol!) but I still wanted to say “hi” and how very sweet you are! 🙂

    • Kathy says:

Awww, Karma, maybe it’s because you are so sweet that you don’t NEED any additional maple syrup! But thanks for the compliment. I am grinning ear to ear.

  18. Dawn says:

That’s a lovely thought Kathy! And it’s wonderful stuff…which of course I would enjoy. But I will be happy for any one of those above (and below of course) if they win. We need to spread the Michigan wealth! If I win it I will send it to my brother and his new wife in NC. He went to Michigan Tech and surely knows how special it is.

    • Kathy says:

Excellent idea, Dawn. About your brother and new wife. He would appreciate the memory of his time at Tech. Just don’t sample it first. You may never let it out of your hands!

  19. Bonnie says:

I have a local producer just up the mountain a bit, so I shall not enter the contest. It might break the bank just sending it to NS.

    • Kathy says:

Bonnie, I thought about not including Canada, but I have too many of you dear Canadian friends. So if you change your mind and want to enter, just say the word. There are surely enough pennies in my piggy bank. 🙂

  20. sybil says:

Love, love Maple Syrup/op. Delicious stuff.

My name is Sybil and I’ve never commented here before but hope you’ll still put my name in your draw. 😉

  21. Susan Derozier says:

I would love to win some maple syrup but this isn’t allowing me to get my message sent for some reason. Sorry for the error.

    • Kathy says:

Susan, how are you doing? I am glad that you were able to get through with your comment and let me know. Your name is in the chook!

  22. Janet says:

What a great idea, Kathy! Yes, yes thank you, I’d love the chance to win a bottle of maple syrup. I think I’ve met your requirements.

    • Kathy says:

Janet, you have totally met my requirements. Good luck in the hat draw! Maybe some maple syrup will be headed toward California…

  23. Brenda Hardie says:

Oh yummmmy!! Alex and I would love to sample Michigan Maple syrup 🙂 I just pulled out a recipe for maple bacon waffles that Alex wants me to make soon. But even if we don’t win…I am quite sure the lucky winner will savor a taste from the northwoods of Michigan ♥ and be delighted!

    • Kathy says:

Brenda, I am delighted that you’ve entered in the contest! (I don’t know about waffles with bacon in them–but it sounds like something Alex would like.) So glad to be sharing some of the sweet sap from the northwoods.

  24. Heather says:

Isn’t this time of year delightful just because of the syrup? We’ve bought from our favorite locals and have been enjoying it sparingly. Will have to try it on popcorn! Since I have easy access to this north woods delicacy, please leave my name outta the chook, but smile when you draw for the lucky winner on my birthday please 🙂

    • Kathy says:

Heather, you are so right. Maple syrup is surely one of the best gifts to come out of a northwoods spring. I must warn you about the maple syrup on popcorn, though. It is VERY sticky. Excessively sticky. But if you’re willing to be sticky–it’s delicious! And how cool that it’s your birthday next weekend. Happy pre-birthday. Your spirit shall help draw the winning ticket, yes indeed!

  25. I always thought I didn’t care for maple syrup…until I started using it as the sweetener for my granola. I would love a chance to win your generously offered maple syrup, thank you!

    • Kathy says:

I am glad to hear you want to be included, Cindy. Do lots of folk make maple syrup there on your island? P.S. I like it in granola, too!

      • Two or three families make it here, but they are very much just family operations. One of the three makes enough to sell a little bit – just locally – and the others just make it for gifts and their own use. I have a friend who goes down to Maple City to help them with their syrup making, and he usually gives me a bit. That’s how I learned how good it is baked in granola…must make use of such a thoughtful gift, after all!

  26. I would love the maple syrup :p I think I have commented twice, I know I read it all the time, anyway, I do miss the U.P. We sold our cabin last October, sigh…….and we are in North Carolina now, the lovely western part, in the Blue Ridge Mountains. But I can still hear the waves of Lake Superior, and smell the leeks in the forest, and hear the lonesome howls of the wolves and see the night skies full of more stars than I have ever imagined. It was a blessing to have five years there, I will cherish those years and hold them close to my heart always. Thanks for keeping me connected through your blogs! And thanks for the chance to win some maple syrup!

    • Kathy says:

Dear Linda, what a delightful picture you’ve painted of Lake Superior. I am now thinking it’s time to go pick some wild leeks. However, this year they will probably be late. Everything is at least a month late. I hope you are enjoying the Blue Ridge Mountains, but it’s good that the northwoods still shine in your heart. Your name shall be in the chook!

  27. Colleen says:

Yes please Kathy! I would love to add my name. I don’t think I’ve ever tasted maple syrup from Michigan, only our Canadian brands. An even bigger treat would be having it delivered in person 🙂

    • Kathy says:

Colleen, now I am wondering about the difference between Canadian and US brands of maple syrup. Would a *real* conoisseur be able to taste subtle differences? Would she know the difference between a syrup from Vermont and Michigan? What a fascinating thought. I know there is a big difference between between Grade A and B syrup, but know little about it. It all tastes good to me! As for delivering it in person…that would be so much fun!

  28. lisaspiral says:

I would love the maple syrup. In fact just the title of your blog inspired me to make pancakes for breakfast. I had to come back this evening to actually read it and make my comment. 🙂

    • Kathy says:

Your comment made me laugh, Lisa. I hope you enjoyed your pancakes. Or that Orion liked them! I haven’t actually made pancakes in a while, but did make French Toast with maple syrup the other day. Dredged the bread in a mixture with orange juice instead of just milk. Yum! Your name is in the contest.

      • lisaspiral says:

Orion loves pancakes. I don’t eat them often and when I do I tend to throw in oatmeal, pecans and blueberries (for me not Orion) OJ in the French toast batter is hard to wrap my head around but I bet it’s tasty.

  29. Karen says:

Whoever the winner is will be very lucky. I’d love to see if there is a difference in syrup from your neck of the woods and mine here in New Hampshire. Winner or not, I’m happy to see another post from you. 😀

    • Kathy says:

Karen, it would be fun to do a taste test side-by-side of Michigan versus New Hampshire syrup. Of course, we’d have to make sure it was the same grade. I am wondering if true connoisseurs can tell the difference in localities during a blind taste test.

  30. Barbara Kass says:

I am just now catching up with my own blogging and responses. It is amazing what the lure of authentic maple syrup will do for my inspiration.

    • Kathy says:

Barbara, how nice to see you here! And I am glad that this maple syrup proved inspiration for you, as well. Consider your name in the chook!

  31. Marion Stevens says:

Kathy- I do believe that I have commented a few times on your blog. I would love to have some of your syrup. I have had maple syrup from Vermont, never.Michigan. I too, saw the article on the news about all the ice up there.and I am wondering are you threatened about it near where you live?

    • Kathy says:

Dear Cousin Marion–yes, you definitely qualify for the maple syrup contest. Wasn’t that ice “tsunami” something? It happened north of us, on the Keweenaw Peninsula. We are not threatened where we are. Thank you for asking.

  32. Stacy says:

Do you know how happy I was when I opened my reader this morning and saw that you wrote a post?! Thank you, Kathy, for brightening my day. Thank you, universe for sending me Kathy. And yes, I would love to win that maple syrup. xo

    • Kathy says:

I am so glad to have brightened your day, Ms. Stacy. Your name is in the chook. Perhaps some sweetness shall head down south to sunny warm Louisiana… Thank you!

  33. Holly Kreag says:

Yay! Welcome back to the blogging world! I can certainly understand how time can slip away and how the writing bug can go on hiatus. And believe it or not, life actually does exist outside of the cyber-world! I believe that I qualify for this contest…pretty sure I’ve posted at least twice. Anyway, hope you’re enjoying the U.P. spring. We’re coming up at the end of the month to open up the cabin for the season. Can’t wait!!

    • Kathy says:

Yep, Holly, I think you definitely qualify. I remember at least two comments. 🙂 As for enjoying the U.P. spring…well, we’re not sure that it’s here yet. It’s almost here. But it hasn’t settled in and decided to stay. Hoping to see a wildflower before June! Maybe there will be one blooming when you arrive.

  34. sonali says:

Its such a comfort to know that you are back and with the same brilliant ideas. Hope everything is going great at your end. Well, maple syrup! Unfortunately, I don’t qualify. 😦

    • Kathy says:

Hi Sonali! Just I am sorry you don’t qualify for this contest. Sad face. But just think–you had your gift of leaves recently, so hopefully you won’t be too sad for too long. Have you ever had real maple syrup?

      • sonali says:

Yes dearie, nothing can truly beat that gift! precious ones 🙂 I admire them so much… maple syrup never tasted. Maybe, its available in some stores here in India, I shall find out. 🙂 no sad faces………… 😀

  35. Joanne says:

What a “sweet” and kind thought Kathy! I always buy Canadian maple syrup (yes, we have such a thing on our supermarket shelves!) Like Sonali, I don’t qualify for your sweepstake, but will look forward to congratulating the lucky winner. 🙂

    • Kathy says:

Gosh, Joanne, I wish I could send EVERYONE a pint of maple syrup! Maybe one of these years, after I win some sweepstakes myself…lol. It will be fun to see who the winner shall be, won’t it? Glad you will be sending your good energy this way during the drawing. And so wonderful to see you again!

  36. Barb says:

Excuse me, but I LOVE authentic maple syrup! I think I’m going to win…(think positive).

  37. Me, me, me!!! I looooove maple syrup…and sweet popcorn, so maple syrup on popcorn is something I MUST try now!
Haven’t been able to check the blogs all week-end, and I’m glad I didn’t miss the deadline 🙂

    • Kathy says:

Glad you decided to play, Michaela. I must warn you, though, about maple syrup on popcorn. (Should have warned everyone.) It is terribly sticky. Incredibly sticky. So you have to prepare yourself for a sweet sticky mess! (But it’s still sooo good…)

  38. Melinda Abeles says:

ooooo, how lovely to have the real deal straight from the UP woods. The rice is fabulous too. I actually have a maple tree that seems to be the same skinny little thing for almost a decade now. I am hoping to one day send a tiny bottle of Mariposa Maple Syrup to you my dear friend Kathy. Yes, please… I would Love to win not only your heart, but also a bottle of syrup!!!!!

    • Kathy says:

Dear Melinda, to think that someday I might sample some Mariposa Maple Syrup! What a treat that would be. If you win this contest, you would actually be sampling Baraga Maple Syrup. Not Aura Maple Syrup. Wondering if anyone here in Aura makes it? Love to see you here, my friend, who definitely qualifies.

  39. Christie says:

What a great idea Kathy. The part that got my attention was maple syrup on popcorn, who would have thought. I will pass on the drawing as I too have some fresh maple syrup in my fridge. Let someone have the yumminess who doesn’t already have some in the house. Also, I am out of oatmeal and now I have a craving because of this blog, how dare you suggest oatmeal and maple syrup. Good to hear from you again even though I want go drink some maple syrup about now…

    • Kathy says:

Thanks, Christie–I did think it would be fun to pass along some local maple syrup. If you try it on popcorn, watch the sticky fingers. It’s so sweet and good, but very messy! Sorry about the craving. lol. I know what you mean. Had to put some on my oatmeal this morning, too.

  40. Wow. Would you look at all the comments. We all came out of the wood work so to speak. You bet I’l like to have my name thrown in the hat or whatever it’s called. I buy Vermont maple syrup.Keep it on hand at all times- maple syrup and honey I can tolerate. It dose not break down in the body the same as refined cane sugar.

    • Kathy says:

Glad that you’ve entered the contest, Yvonne! (And that your body can tolerate maple syrup.) Hoping to announce the contest winner today if Life cooperates.
