Mums for my mom

Guess who is coming to visit next week?

If the planets align and all is well–my almost 89 year old mom will soon be coming to visit our little house in the woods!

Last time she and Dad visited was in October, 2009.

It snowed.

Hey, I just found a picture of their visit. How fun.

Mom really wants to take a trip to our house–she even pondered driving herself–but we found a better solution. My brother owns a cabin halfway between her assisted living in the Thumb of Lower Michigan and our UP house.

My brother and his wife will drive her up to the cabin next week and I will motor down to pick her up.

She’ll stay here for several days, and then Barry and I will drive her back to the cabin and spend some time with my brother and his sweetie.

We almost never buy fall flowers but this October it’s so mild and beautiful (high of 73 today) that we thought maybe Mum would appreciate some mums. We’ve bought one basket of mums every week for the last three weeks, so hopefully at least one will be blooming when she arrives.

Can’t wait for her visit!

A visit from your mom – how wonderful! (My mom hasn’t been to our house in years as well. Maybe the stars will align for us one day.) Enjoy your visit! XOXO

  4. Debbie says:

Wow, that’s a LONG time between visits! Here’s hoping your weather cooperates, and your visit with “Mum” is everything you hope it will be!

    • Kathy says:

It certainly has been a very long time since Mum was here, Debbie. Fortunately, we’ve been able to visit together (in many different places) during the past 12 years. On lucky years we’ve seen each other many times. But this will be special to have her here ❀ ❀

  5. I’m so happy for you! And for your mum, ur, mom. What a blessing to have her visit your home in the woods. With mums. Moms and mums are so cheerful! ❀

    • Kathy says:

Here’s a wee secret, my friend. I have never really been fond of mums. (My husband is, though.) However, this year my heart warms every time I look at them!

      • Awww. And funny, my guy doesn’t like mums either! But this year he changed his mind, and we have two big pots. Each large mum has combo colors in them: yellow, orange, and cranberry. 3-in-1!

How precious and wonderful that your Mom is able to travel and you can spend time together in the woods. Enjoy ! That’s probably why the weather has been so mild, so you can enjoy the north woods. ! BTW: Now that you ditched the sh*t phone, how are things working out??

    • Kathy says:

We are so very lucky, Melanie. A couple of years ago we never imagined a visit like this would be possible again. As for the new phone, it is still making me smile. There is still a learning curve–just learned that you can touch the screen to focus in a different place–but am happily taking pictures once again.

I hope you have the most wonderful visit β™₯️

  9. How exciting!!! What a lovely time of year for a visit and it must be so much fun making all the plans and preparations for your mom. πŸ’• You were missing her so much this time last year. I’m so happy for you, Kathy! (I hope it doesn’t snow this time. πŸ™‚ )

    • Kathy says:

It really is so heart-warming that she wants to come to visit, Barbara. After that long time apart, it’s extra special to be able to have this time. So far the extended weather forecast still looks mild, so let’s keep our fingers crossed. (And isn’t it interesting how the anticipation can be just as fun as the actual happening?)

  10. Christie says:

I am so excited for the both of you, enjoy. She has come so far in the last couple years. Yes, she will love the mums.

    • Kathy says:

Christie, how nice to see you! And I will tell Mom what you said. She has come so far in two years. It’s a blessing that she’s able to come visit.

  11. Rose Falter says:

Your mom will love being with you! So very happy she is able to make this longgggg trip!

    • Kathy says:

Rosemary, it is so nice to see you here–I smiled to think you are sometimes reading my blog. It IS a longggg trip, but Mom is determined. It will be great to be able to spend time with her here in our home.

hoping your visit with your Mom is delightful!

  13. This is lovely news and I hope that all goes well to get your mom to and fro from your house back down to your brother’s house. It is a nice time of the year and hopefully there will be no snow by the the time she arrives at your house.

    • Kathy says:

Thanks, Yvonne. They are still predicting temps in the 60’s (and maybe upper 50’s) all the time that she’s here. Fingers crossed. πŸ™‚

  14. dawnkinster says:

This is so wonderful that she’ll be able to come up! I used to get so excited when my folks visited, it wasn’t often that they made it all the way to Michigan, so I wanted it to be special when they were here, just like you do. Have a wonderful time with your mom! I’m so happy for you both!

    • Kathy says:

I was hoping you’d see this post and know that Mom was coming up to visit, Dawn. Today’s chores–clean the bathtub and the refrigerator. I am thinking about your mom and dad’s occasional visits now and how precious indeed they were.

  15. Reggie says:

How absolutely wonderful, Kathy. I am soo soo happy for you. Really hope the visit was delightful!

Thank you for reading. May you be blessed in your life...may you find joy in the simple things...
