My mom just sent me to my room…

My mother just sent me to my room.

Honest.

We finished eating the most delicious Mexican chicken over spaghetti–plus steamed pea pods–and she said, “Kathy, go to your room and write your blog now.”

So…what does any good daughter do?  Goes to her room, of course!  And writes TWO blogs!  Can you imagine it?  What kind of person writes two blogs while she is on vacation?

Someone who has 153 photos and six billion words running around in her head, that’s who.

Maybe my mom will let me out of my room when I get both of these blogs written.

Mackinac Bridge...bridging two peninsulas

OK, I’m downstate in Yale in the Thumb of our great state of Michigan.  I could write until midnight and still not tell you all the Exciting Things that have happened.  If you want to read my post from yesterday, skip on over to the Baby Blog.  Last night (while awaiting my brother and sister-in-law to arrive in Bellaire) I wandered into the third coffee shop of the day and played on the computer while anticipating their arrival.  Click here if you want to read that exciting blog, too.

I have at least a dozen photos to show you about Bellaire cuz I couldn’t stop clicking photos.  But those shall have to wait.  Instead you can view the Lake Michigan and Mackinac Bridge photos from yesterday.  And I shall share some of the songs I listened to on the radio.  Because you can’t imagine how exciting it is to finally get at least 20 radio stations!  It’s like heaven!  I kept scanning between all twenty, over and over again.  The songs are in italics as this blog continues.

One of these nights…in between the dark and the light…swear I’m gonna find you…

First, you guys must appreciate the bridge photos.  Because I have a secret to tell you.  Actually it’s not a secret.  Since I was four years old and tried to cross a swinging wooden bridge…I’ve been scared of bridges.  When the kids were young and we traveled downstate I would insist upon story-telling and loud singing as we crossed the bridge.  My heart palpitated and great fear filled my body!  I knew we would careen off into the Deep Blue of Lake Michigan. My hands would sweat.  It was horrific.

Yesterday I–this is so weird to type–actually casually took photos as I crossed the bridge at 25 mph.  This goes to prove that phobias can be cured!  Of course I didn’t actually aim the camera while taking the pictures.  That would have been too dangerous.  I kinda positioned the camera in the general direction of the bridge and snapped.  Luckily some of the photos turned out!

Who is taking pics of the bridge while driving?? Shame! Hands on the wheel...

No one could look as good as you…MERCY!…Pretty Woman.  You look as lovely as can be.  What do I see? Is she walking back to me?

It was lovely to stop along Lake Michigan and amble along the shore.  It was cool in the Upper Peninsula yesterday. Maybe in the 60’s.  A sweatshirt was needed.  I parked the car and walked down on the dunes.  Took at least 50 photos.

Ohmygoodness...look up above!

Cracklin’ Rosie get on board, we’re gonna ride…you got the way to make me happy…you make me sing like a guitar humming…

The cottage that my brother and his wife own in Bellaire is maybe six or seven hours away from our house in the Upper Peninsula.  You have to drive four and a half hours east, followed by one and a half hours south and west.  My parents bought this cottage when I was thirteen years old.  We grew up along the shores of  Intermediate Lake playing on paddleboards and swimming in the waters.  I am so glad my brother bought the place…and it remains in the family. It’s a good stopping-off point when I head 550 miles down to my parents’ house in the Thumb.

Feather. Up close.

I’m back in the USSR…You don’t know how lucky you are…Moscow girls make me sing and shout and jo jo jo jo jo jo’s always on my mind…

Excuse me.  In my mind I’m still singing all the classic rock songs.  I listened to WHNN on the way down. In ancient times it used to be called Honey Radio and it played 1950’s tunes.  Now it plays classic rock AND oldies.  I bounced along on the seat for miles and miles.

I also practiced deep breathing.  I am here to announce that if you breathe really slow (innnnnn and outtttttt) you can breathe 2-3 breaths per minute.  I measured it against the road markers.

Seriously.

Breathe deep the gathering gloom…

And whence came this eggshell? Who lived here?

Everybody dancing in the moonlight; everybody feeling all right…

Beautiful Lake Michigan

Drop of a hat she’s as willing as
Playful as a pussycat
Then momentarily out of action
Temporarily out of gas
To absolutely drive you wild, wild..
She’s all out to get you

Please do not try to ascertain the meaning of these song lyrics.  They are all random.  Whatever lyrics came across the 20 stations as I drove, drove, drove for 525 miles into my parents’ loving arms.

Beach pea plants

Until my mom sent me to my room.

Oh to relax along Lake Michigan. Oh, happiness!

Just like in the old days.

Can’t wait to spend more time with them.  In fact, it’s time to get out of this bloggin’ room and join them in the family room.  Thank you for stopping by.

And what’s one of YOUR favorite oldie songs?

I see trees of green, red roses too
I see them bloom for me and you
And I think to myself what a wonderful world.

I see skies of blue and clouds of white
The bright blessed day, the dark sacred night
And I think to myself what a wonderful world.

The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces of people going by
I see friends shaking hands saying how do you do
They’re really saying I love you.

I hear babies cry, I watch them grow
They’ll learn much more than I’ll never know
And I think to myself what a wonderful world
Yes I think to myself what a wonderful world.

Oh, Kathy….I laughed and laughed reading about your Mom sending you to your room. My Mom is 89 years old and she still tries to send me to my room when I visit! For a nap, or early to bed or because I’m looking tired or happen to get caught yawning. We’re spending time with Rick’s parents in Australia and his Dad is doing the same thing. We are having so many chuckles…experienceng first hand how our parental instincts never seem to change. And finding the hidden places in ourselves that still haven’t really grown up at all!! Ah, well….
I hope you have a wonderful visit with your parents. And yes, what a wonderful world it is….one of my favorites as well as John Lennon’s Imagine.

    • Kathy says:

You don’t know how thrilled I was to read that your mom still sends you to your room, too, Colleen! Those hidden places where we forever remain a child…or a parent…

“Oh to relax along Lake Michigan. Oh, happiness!” Ohhhhhhh, what a shot. And I took full advantage of the opportunity; hopping out of your front pocket for a wee bit of a breather.

Delightful post. Grateful to be part of your adventure. As always, thank you.

By the way, I’m experiencing “technical difficulties.” Apparently I’m a murderer ad I accidentally killed my hard drive today. It’s in “repair heaven” right now and I’m borrowing Len’s laptop. I won’t be posting another blog until it’s recususitated ….

    • Kathy says:

A murderer, Laurie! I can’t believe you admitted this publically, LOL! But you DID post a blog before its reincarnation, didn’t you? I swear I saw a headline come through the email today! Something about the alphabet…

  3. Thanks for the songs and the view. I shake your hand my friend.

I was humming as I read all the lyrics.

I have never been to Mackinac, hope to go sometime.

    • Kathy says:

You must visit Mackinac, Kim! You will enjoy it. Much fudge and ice cream there. The island is fascinating, although very commercial…

  4. Dawn says:

I had the music in my head too as I read the lyrics. What a great trip! I know just the dunes you explored, by the side of the road along Lake Michigan before you got to THE BRIDGE! Honestly! I wanted to take similar pictures last time I drove over it but I was TOO SCARED! Even though my husband was driving! LOL. I got a queasy stomach when I saw your picture of the clouds overhead. DON”T BE LOOKING UP THERE WHILE YOU”RE DRIVING!!! LOL!

Anyway…the last set of lyrics was the perfect ending. A fitting song for a lovely blog.

Now, about your mother….aren’t there rules about this at your age? No? I guess not, once we’re “under their roof” we revert to kids again. And what a relief that is, to become the kid for awhile! Enjoy!

    • Kathy says:

Dawn, I can so relate to your fears. Even when someone else is driving! It’s a darn loooong bridge. And I have begged Barry to get his eyes back on the road, darn it, or we’re gonna die!!! As for mothers and rules…nah. No rules when it comes to mamas and their kids, so it seems…

  5. Carol says:

The pictures show a wonderful trip. I envy you but am thoroughly enjoying being a second-hand traveler along with you!

    Moms never change, do they?

    • Kathy says:

Carol, I am adoring these times with my mom and dad. They are precious indeed. Thank you for traveling along! I could hear you in the back seat saying “Are we here yet?” LOL!

  6. jessica says:

Kathy your site looks great on a phone, just in case you were wondering. I’m at my mothers house too. I almost got sent to my room today for not wearing the ring she gave me four years ago!

    • Kathy says:

Jessica, we’re in synch! Shame on you, put on your ring! tee hee…I can’t imagine what this would look like on a phone. Can’t imagine that at all!

  7. flandrumhill says:

Kathy, I have a problem with crossing bridges too. I probably held my breath while crossing the Mackinac Bridge as a child with my parents. I didn’t think I’d ever be able to walk across one but I eventually did. I also walked across the Catalano suspension bridge in British Columbia (not sure if I’d want to do that again). I’ve even driven across the Confederation Bridge to Prince Edward Island, which I believe is the longest bridge in the world. There’s only water as far as the eye can see. If that doesn’t freak you out, nothing will.

Two bridges cross Halifax Harbour and I frequently have to cross them to get into the ‘big bad city.’ I always try to cross the smaller one.

    • Kathy says:

Amy, if you held your breath crossing the Mackinac Bridge it would have been for 5-10 minutes. YIKES! Although I have done the same… any brain damage detected in this blog is probably the result of holding my breath when crossing bridges…

  8. Robin says:

It looks like a wonderful trip (which goes well with the last set of song lyrics — one of my favorite oldies).

  9. P.j. grath says:

Reminds me of when I was in graduate school in Cincinnati. People would come to visit, and I would drag them all over the city, showing the sights. Finally one of my friends (who was my mother’s age) asked me, “Don’t you have reading you need to do? Can we just go back to your apartment and sit for a while?”

    • Kathy says:

Pamela, sometimes the best times in traveling just involve sitting around and hanging out. It sometimes takes us a while to figure that out, doesn’t it? Too bad you couldn’t make it over to Bellaire!

  10. Yes – I posted “alphabetically speaking” to solicit ideas in 26 posts I’m thinking about for the fall. Sadly, it was “photo free” because all (and I do mean all) of my photographs are on the dead hard drive.

  11. Elisa's Spot says:

    I hope embeds work here!

  12. Barbara says:

Do you have tunnels out there? That’s what paralyzes me with panic and fear. Wonderful photos, Kathy, loved the eggshell and the dune grass – the lakeshore looks remarkably like the seashore.

    • Kathy says:

Barbara, we do not really have tunnels out here. Don’t know about them very much…interesting what paralyzes us and why. Glad you liked the lakeshore photos. It was a fun afternoon.

  13. Reggie says:

I loved these photos, Kathy. You’re writing with such lightness and playfulness, your happiness at visiting your folks is really coming through.

And your Mom sounds awesome – to send you to your room with the instruction “Go write your blog.” Wow… She really gets the fact that this is important to you, and that you have a large following of people around the world who love to hear about your adventures, and that you don’t want to disappoint them, hey?

    Awesome. 🙂

    • Kathy says:

Reggie, my mom and dad BOTH get it about my blog. They are so awesome. Dad reads it every day when it comes out…Mom waits for 3-4 days sometimes and catches up. But they both know how important it is to me and how passionate I am about it. They are the BEST!

  14. Cindy Lou says:

I love when my mom sends me to my room! Like Colleen said, when she thinks I need a rest or a time out…..we never outgrow our mommas!
